They played We Belong by Pat Benetar on KZOK

It just seems a bit strange to me that KZOK would play “We Belong” when it crossed over with the other two iheart stations in Seattle that air a classic hits/adult hits format. The song could easily be dropped from the KZOK library and it wouldn’t really have a negative impact, as a KZOK listener probably also tunes into KJEB. I would argue that KZOK and KJEB listeners are more similar than KZOK and KISW. Interestingly, I’ve heard “Invincible” by Pat Benetar on KJEB before, and this song is much more rock-oriented than “We Belong.”

iHeart has a synergy going with KZOK, The Jet, and Jack. There's going to be overlap in what they play, but they are being programmed in such a way that they aren't stepping on each others toes. One of them would've flipped if it was redundant or conflicting.

I guess some of you guys would also ban Joan Baez, Grace Slick, Sandy Denny, Carol King, Joni Mitchell. and Janis Joplin too. They're too soft for white blue color old head banging grandpa's .

Can we play any black artists besides Jimi Hendrix?

Joan Jett came out of the punk rock scene. The Runaways!
Is punk rock now classic rock?
What about The Ramones, Sex Pistols, and The Clash?

I've heard this song on classic rock radio in various areas for a very long time, on satellite too. If the song was problematic for the male demo they are going for, it wouldn't be in rotation. KZOK has probably been playing it well before iHeart took over!
KZOK has played "We Belong" through the SRO Theaters, Adams Communications, CBS and iHeart layers of ownership.

So I guess you could say "it belongs".

Well, if you want to use the pizza topping analogy to look at this Pat Benetar discussion - consider pineapple. There are a select few who think the idea of putting pineapple on a pizza is disgusting and some form of sacrilege. There have been polls taken and Facebook groups formed to discuss whether or not pineapple should be forbidden as a pizza topping... But though there are a few outspoken anti-pineapplers out there, the masses in general must be ordering and happily consuming them, because most every pizza shop, at least where I Iive, offers pineapple as a topping and/or "Hawaiian pizza" as an option.
If it ain't a thin crust, wall to wall pepperoni with extra cheese, it ain't a pizza.

Another angle to this shocking news: Do they also get rid of Elton John's "Tiny Dancer" too? One of the most popular songs for driving you could hear on the radio ever and a bona fide Classic Rock anthem just because it's a piano ballad?

It can't be all AC/DC and Guns N' Roses, y'know.

I couldn't find the spin on Mediabase. That's interesting. Were you listening to the stream? I believe they use fill songs to cover up local breaks. Not sure. It could have slipped in that way.
It didn't "slip in". It's in rotation, as it is on all of iHeart's other classic rock stations.

Look again. Nine spins a week, down one from last week. It's one of three Pat Benatar songs they play.

A bit of a side note, but I hate when they do that. Usually the song doesn’t even finish before you hear a flash cut back to local programming. I think I’d prefer just hearing random commercials from the ad council over a random song thrown in.

Now if one wants to argue some song has been played to death by radio, I get it. And on that list would be some good songs like Stairway to Heaven.

To be fair, I’ve heard more “soft” songs on CFMI 101.1 in Vancouver, British Columbia. It’s more of a classic hits station masquerading as classic rock if you ask me. Some of the songs they played today are:

Duran Duran - Ordinary World
Aerosmith - I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing
Kim Carnes - Betty Davis Eyes
Bonnie Raitt - Something to Talk About
Iggy Pop - Real Wild Child
Neil Diamond - Sweet Caroline
B52’s - Love Shack
Billy Joel - You May be Right
Tracy Chapman - Fast Car
Counting Crowes - Mr Jones
John Par - St Elmo’s Fire
Sheryl Crowe - All I Wanna Do
John Waite - Missing You
… and… “We Belong” by Pat Benetar!

Point is, many of these songs might be heard on KJEB, but probably not KZOK. If there isn’t a classic hits station in the market, I guess they could all land on the same playlist (but it’s not “classic rock” from my perspective).

Your example is a Canadian station. Due to government restrictions, they're schizophrenic by design.

I don’t think the country matters at all here, Kelly. Sure, it would matter if I picked out the can-con music that rotates throughout the day, but these are songs that I’ve all heard on KJEB (save for Iggy Pop). The only difference here is that Vancouver lacks a classic hits station so the classic rock station serves both audiences. I think it’s a little weird to go from actual rock so many songs like these, but they do it.
