The Curious Case of Classic Hits 102.3 and 107.3 (B-CS)

I was in College Station yesterday and noticed something really odd. For a number of years K272FK (102.3 FM) and KAPN (107.3 FM) have been a simulcast... well sort of: The timing between the two hasn't been in sync and is typically off by more than a minute. I've long wondered how that amount of delay is possible.

Well, the new development is that 102.3 is still airing the Classic Hits format as "Classic Hits 102-3 and 107-3", but 107.3 is now airing Christmas music as... "Classic Hits 102-3 and 107-3".

So two stations in the same market with the same name and promoting the same frequencies have completely different programming.

No explanation on the website or Facebook page when I checked.

The logical answer would be that the translator is being fed off of an HD2 or an AM. Not having been to Bryan/College Station since I was in elementary school, I couldn’t tell you much about that cluster. You'd know better than I would if that could actually be the case.

So it is correct that K272FK is being fed by KORA HD-2 and not KAPN (but the translator and KORA are at the same transmitter site, which is right behind the studio), but an HD would not introduce that amount of delay.

One idea I wondered is if KAPN and K272FK were actually run on separate automation instances and shared essentially the same traffic and music merge, perhaps left over from when they owned 103.9.

That would explain how they now have different music formats but the same imaging.

Regardless, it's very bizarre.

The translator is being fed by KORA HD3. And for some reason that HD3 does have that big delay that the translator has. I don’t know why they have a delay. Also KORA HD1 doesn’t really lock in unless you go to HD2 then back to HD1. I do know HD3 sometimes has song info and sometimes there’s no text.

Currently 102.3 is about 35 seconds ahead of KORA HD3. They do have some Christmas songs in the mix but it’s not the same Christmas song as what’s playing on 107.3.

I noticed last night and this morning that KORA HD is off. But 102.3 is still on IDing as HD3. This morning 102.3 was about a whole song ahead of 107.3. Last night 107.3 was ahead.
