It was perfect timing, but Scott really showed how to properly execute the CHR format with high energy and fun that had great appeal with adults, especially women who want to feel they are still connected to the current generation.
The Zoo, while known by radio from Tampa, really got exposure on Z100. He really defined how take all the great things from 60s, early 70s Top 40 radio and make it just scream 80s.
With KIIS coming into it's excellence and showing the more laid back way to do the format, Scott Shannon showed how to do it with energy and get great adult ratings, which the Hot hits style couldn't do. Hot Hits did do a lot to keep the format alive during the bad times of the early 80s, the final part of the fm transition too.
While the music getting better was just as big a part, between KIIS and WHTZ, CHR in every market had two different approaches that were on fire. Those who did a direct copy had varying results, most not great, but when they fine tuned their stations to their markets it got great demos 12-54.
Scott also worked with James to create the greatest radio jingles in history and they still are unmatched.
I love how the big New York stations, their programers, consultants, and corporate masters spent hundreds of thousands in research to conclude that CHR would never work in New York (yeah not their boring way) Scott put his vision on, they laughed and said a#3 to PLJ and KTU in teens, no adults will listen look at Hot His. They couldn't hear or understand the difference. As we know Scott's vision shot to #1 and became more than just a radio station, more than just a morning show, people identified with a friend on the radio, an under dog, a departure from the radio people who sounded and acted like they believed they were gods above the people and talking AT the audience.
Thanks Scott Shannon for making radio special for a whole new generation, and what your brilliance did with parents and kids bonding every day through your creation!
