99 X Is Back

Just as a service to those out-of-market radio-curmudgeons** who still like to experience a live format-shift or show-start: Axel spent the afternoon today promoting that "new (morning) shows" with at least one new "old voice" start tomorrow (Tuesday) in the 7am ET hour.
**like me. I'll be rolling my sleepy butt out of bed early to see how they handle it. See y'all on the radio then.

The only others I can think of are 103.1 The Wave/Salt Lake City and 97.7 TOSOTR/Atlanta

On the HD2 side of things there are stations like 106.7 KROQ HD2 Roq of the 80s and 105.3 KITS HD2 Classic Live 105 among others
95.1 the River (KEWL) in Texarkana is 90s alternative. They flipped to it on Labor Day 2020. A gold-based alternative, 104.3 the Fuse (WKZG) recently launched in Green Bay, WI.

Thanks for pointing out KEWL, i was unaware of this station. This post reminded me of Rock 105.5/Point Huron, MI (alt gold) and 106.3 The Core/Saginaw, MI (alt/active gold).

Noticed today that TOSOTR has dumped all of the Steve Craig bumpers...they've also turned off the RDS.

Recently in the Monroe / Madison GA area, I was getting WSPA on 98.9 and WSSL on 100.5 from Upstate SC clearly while driving with no trace of the Atanta signals on either frequency, strong tropo that night I guess, this was on New Years 2023.

WSPA (also in the same Greenville/Spartanburg/Anderson market as WSSL) is a blowtorch. They must both be transmitting on very high locations. Yes on heavy tropo days it pretty much steps all over W255CJ. Could always tell in December because I could hear the Christmas music playing. The HD for WSPA shows up about 50% of the time on my car stereo similar to what WSSL HD is doing now on analog (no HD on aux antenna) 99X on 100.5. I can usually get both anywhere south and east of Knoxville too. Also anywhere on US-64 east of Chattanooga.

Most of the powerful stations in that market are on mountains with the signal optimized in the direction of the population. WSSL is an exception, but its transmitter is closer to Atlanta.

Okay, they played the Smiths "How soon is now" tonight, I felt the 80's rushing back in.
@Doctor_Technical thanks for the tip on tomorrow morning, I will be listening with you.
Glancing at the playlist, I'm concerned.
Too much maintream 90's.
99X presently plays very few if any, more obscure, indies that were played in the 90's. Not enough 80's alternative.
When they start adding contemporary alternative , I hope 99X goes out of it's way to play indies, stay away from the best of the charts, and take chances, and not avoid a measured amount of controversy.

I have a feeling if Steve Craig joins 99X, the music playlist will shake up a bit. Similar to what TOSOTR is now.

100.5 WSSL is in the center of the Upstate from a very tall (about 1200 ft) tower near Gray Court in Laurens County, the top of which is 1926 Feet Above Sea Level, its 60 dbu signal reaches Hartwell GA and its 40 dbu signal reaches Athens GA. Very strong and reaches parts of Columbia SC and Charlotte NC.

98.9 WSPA's site is on Hogback Mountain off I-26 near the SC/NC line and sits 3333 ft above sea level, I've heard their signal as far south as Augusta GA and tropo down to Douglas GA (about the same latitude as Savannah) so there is plenty of punch in their signals without any other stations to interfere.

Under normal circumstances I can hear both of these stations to about Gainesville/Commerce GA which isn't too far from Atlanta.

Other strong Upstate SC blowtorch signals I've heard in that area are WESC 92.5 and WTPT 93.3 and to a lesser extent WFBC 93.7

Last year on a plane, I heard WTPT 93.3 flying high over the Birmingham AL area, I was very surprised...97.1 WSRV came in there as well.

With tropo I recently also heard WSRV 97.1 and WEZV 102.9 from Jacksonville FL while in Tifton GA.

I have been told by people in the industry that WSPA-FM is considered the most or one of top most powerful signal in SC overall. Probably not measured, but I wouldn’t be surprised. I’ve gotten it from Concord, NC to just before Lawrenceville GA on 85 as well as in Hickory to the north and Columbia and Augusta to the south.

Didn't WSSL used to be a full class C? I see they're now a C0...and no, I don't mean a full C that moved to C0 when the FCC came out with class C0. I'm talking about a facility change where they downgraded from a C to a C0.

I also want to say that there was some kind of agreement for WSSL to downgrade at the request of Susquehanna for the benefit of WWWQ/WNNX 100.5, but either Cumulus buying Susquehanna or Clear Channel buying WSSL killed the deal.

I remember getting WFOX (WSRV, which is a full class C) in Columbia, SC, in the afternoon, without tropo.

Jabba, Susquehanna indeed consummate a deal with Clear Channel to downgrade WSSL to a C0 so WNNX could increase power from 3,000 to 13,500 watts at the same height. I doubt the WNNX power increase hurt WSSL’s signal at all in any place that matters.

How does doing those things benefit a commercial radio station, in ratings or revenue?

You’re welcome. The reason I remember it is that I have roots in that region, so I’m interested in radio over there. I thought it was so strange that a place like Texarkana could get such a station. I didn’t even know about Rock 105.5 and 106.3 the Core. Thank you for pointing those out.

Not long ago I was also able to hear WSSL 100.5 all the way down to Augusta and even further south with no trouble down to Wayneboro / Wrens GA.

This was on the border of WXRS's fringe signal from Swainsboro GA (Also a country station)

I live in Gaffney SC where WSSL is local with no static 40 miles SW of here
