The CW to play Golf with LIV Tour

Looks like CBS is gonna play hardball with Nexstar planning to pass on airing LIV Golf on it's CW affiliates it owns... https://www.ftvlive.com/sqsp-test/2023/2/7/perry-sook-vs-cbs
If this happens & Perry Sook is forced to strip its CW affiliation from CBS-owned stations, they'll be some scrambling in big markets. One thing's for sure, KRON in San Francisco & WPHL in Philadelphia, will pick up the CW affiliation in a nanosecond if this happens & we'll probably see something similar to what KCAL in L.A. has with KBCW (SF) & WPSG (Philly).

The following seven markets would be affected by this possible development.
  • Atlanta
  • Detroit
  • Philadelphia
  • Sacramento/Stockton/Modesto
  • San Francisco/Oakland/San Jose
  • Seattle/Tacoma
  • Tampa/St. Petersburg/Sarasota

Also stations like KMAX Sacramento, KBCW San Francisco, are also secondary CBS affiliates in the event the primary CBS Stations like KOVR and KPIX has to air breaking news. stations like WUPA Atlanta, KSTW Seattle, WTOG Tampa these cities have CW Affiliates managed by Paramount but have to deal with the CBS Affiliation managed by another group. like Cox, Gray, Tegna.

Sacramento would be in an odd position given that Nexstar owns KTXL the Fox Affiliate in the area. If/when that happens the golf programming would be placed on a subchannel of KTXL. However, KMAX is the default CW Affiliate managed by CBS and is on standby to carry CBS programming in the event KOVR has to air breaking news.

This is Scott Jones…

…and his claims deserve scrutiny.

Two weeks ago, he claimed in a Patreon-paywalled post that CBS was seeking to disaffiliate their CW affiliates over the LIV contract. That claim is totally contradicted by this post, in which CBS is refusing to air LIV specifically because of a conflict of interest with their PGA contract. Nowhere does it say here that they want to dump the CW. 🤔 But Nexstar's claiming to want to dump CBS wholesale? What a brittle, unreasonable group... if true.

Honestly, it looks like Perry Sook made a threat he knows he can never fulfill, as CBS is more important to his stations than he’s making them out to be. And of course he’s bitter that CBS yanked the affiliation from his WJMN in Marquette MI and put it on the .2 of a Lilly-owned diginet tree. Perry likely made the threat to CBS management, which leaked it to Scott, who ran with it with nary a point of critical thinking.

And to be honest, if WCIU isn’t airing LIV, then there’s no reason for the CBS-owned CW affiliates or CW affiliates owned by any other group to carry LIV. Which makes this much ado about nothing and makes Scott Jones little more than a rumormonger this side of Rich Lieberman.

Just saying…

Yes Rich Lieberman he is a TV critic that makes rumors about the San Francisco Bay Area TV and Radio market some of them have been later disproven.

When FTVlive is doing posts they are reported in the preliminary phase until TVNewscheck, Fiercevideo, TVspy, Variety, Robert Feder steps in to verify the claims. However I like to know how that is going to playout given that in Sacramento Nexstar manages the Fox affiliate in the market KTXL and they have to clear Fox Entertainment/Sports programming. KMAX and KOVR is managed by Paramount in the area and they have to clear both CBS and CW programming.

More reason not to watch anything on CW.
Until early last season, I watched The CW for DC superhero shows; however, I became disillusioned with the direction that DC Entertainment, now under the direction of Warner Bros. Discovery, has been taking. With regard to DC Entertainment, Warner Bros. Discovery has been following Captain Cold's four rules of planning:

"Make the plan, execute the plan, expect the plan to go off the rails, throw away the plan."

All those DC shows I used to watch are going to be gone soon (well, those that aren't already), so I have decided to move on other interests.

I checked the Spectrum Guide and noticed that WPIX, The CW's New York affiliate, will begin airing LIV Golf next weekend. The schedule for the first event is as follows.

Sat., Feb. 25 - 1:00 pm to 6:00 pm ET - Mayakoba, Day 2
Sun., Feb. 26 - 1:00 pm to 6:00 pm ET - Mayakoba, Day 3

As for Day 1, it will be streamed exclusively on The CW App.

It's also on KTLA Los Angeles, like WPIX a Nexstar-owned CW O-and-O. The Chicago listings are in flux. Some have LIV on WCIU both days, others have it on WGN Saturday (WCIU has a basketball special it's touting) and WCIU Sunday. We'll see.

It's really Nexstar's KCWE and if it was this Weekend then not up to date Sprectrum Guide.

Like in iowa The CW network is owned by nexstar while the CW affiliate is owned by Tegna. WHO 13 an NBC affiliate is owned by Nexstar.

I wonder how many of the stations declining the golf are doing so because management fears audience outrage over the Saudi connection or simply because management can make more money showing something else in that time slot. We here are all either in the broadcasting business or have an intense interest in TV and radio, so the sports fans among us are well aware of what LIV Golf is and who's behind it. But is the average viewer?
