Bally RSN owner Sinclair looking at bankruptcy

Today is Decision Day for Bally's and Diamond Sports in regards to the San Diego Padres and Arizona Diamondbacks. If the payments to either team are not made by Midnight Eastern, the ball defaults into MLB's court as to how and where the majority of the games will be seen. The Colorado Rockies are in the same boat, as no one has yet come to their rescue with the closing ATT Sportsnet. MLB Network is picking up some of the games with this season's expanded daily game schedule at least through May. The next 48 hours should prove interesting.

30 Minutes....

No news articles that I've seen mention anything about last night/early this morning's deadline or possible ramifications. I did find the article below of interest:

YouTube Could Be The New Home of MLB Baseball if Bally Sports & AT&T SportsNets Shutdown

Over the last few weeks, a lot has changed in the world of Regional Sports Networks (RSNs) as AT&T SPortsNets announced plans to shut down and Bally Sports has declared bankruptcy.
Now MLB has been in talks with multiple cable networks and YouTube to find ways to air MLB games in the market both on a traditional cable TV provider and streaming online, according to a report from the Sports Business Journal.
It seems that MLB is hoping that instead of offering free streaming through MLB.TV app they will be able to get some cash from Google’s YouTube by selling streaming rights to YouTube.

getting closer to RSS (regional sports streams) becoming a reality.

In regards to the San Diego Padres, they did make their rights payment today, so crisis averted there.

We have known for some time now that Bally Sports has been losing subscribers now we know just how bad the losses really are. According to a report from the S&P Global Market Intelligence firm Bally Sports North has lost over half of its subscribers over the last 10 years. In 2013 Fox Sports North at the time had about 2.9 million subscribers. Now that number is just 1.2 million subscribers.
Recently Bally Sports has been dropped by a growing number of streaming and cable providers. Including DISH, Sling TV, YouTube TV, Hulu, and more.
If you are a cord cutter and want to watch Bally Sports your options are very limited. Currently, only DIRECTV STREAM and Fubo offer Bally Sports networks for cord cutters.
Currently, Bally Sports bankruptcy is only just getting started. It is very possible that this could even drag out for years. During this time Bally Sports will continue to operate and air games as long as it has contracts for its content.

I would assume Bally Sports North had a larger proportion of Dish Network subscribers than many of the other RSNs, accounting for its very rural territory (Minnesota, the Dakotas and parts of Iowa and Wisconsin).

We can compare 2013 (average game time 2:55) to 2021. Time of game is up 7%, number of pitches is up 3%, and seconds per pitch is up 6%. Advertising time between innings is actually down 7%.

EDIT: And I should add, game time is up 50 minutes from 1975. Even if you assume there were zero ads in baseball in '75, the math doesn't work out.
Slightly off topic but:

MLB Opening Day games 26 minutes shorter vs. last year’s average: How the pitch clock performed

MLB’s 15 games on Opening Day averaged 2 hours and 45 minutes Thursday, 26 minutes shorter than last year’s average, indicating a successful regular-season start for the pitch clock introduced to shorten games as part of the league’s new rule changes

Semi-related: There are many baseball pundits who believe that with all the money they spent on free agent ballplayers over the last couple of years (which may well be the reason Bally paid big bucks to the team for TV rights), the San Diego Padres could be one of the favorites to win the 2023 World Series.

I just can’t believe Diamond Sports would risk further scrutiny and embarrassment as a company bailing out on teams through the first full month of the season. I do think they’ll come up with the money in time.
Keep in mind that Bally Sports isn't just the primary broadcaster of MLB games for I believe 14 baseball franchises, they also broadcast for 13 NBA basketball and 10 NHL hockey teams, and also do some work with other sports teams in various leagues.

That in mind, they may believe this is an opportune time to start bowing out, especially on some of the heftier priced contracts, or in cities where they're losing money. The regular MLB baseball season just started within the past few days. The regular seasons of both the NBA and NHL are winding down and their playoffs start soon. So Bally Sports can bow out on baseball from at least a few teams very early in the season, complete the NBA and NHL seasons and then see where the proverbial chips fall over the coming weeks and months. While it may leave MLB in a bit of a pickle, there's plenty of time for the NBA and NHL to work through things before their preseasons begin in the fall.

The leagues will need to make up the same amount they were promised as that money goes into player contracts.
