Trying to describe how K-Love, Air1, Way-FM and others work

There is lots of hate for K-Love and Air1. It’s mainly by people who have no clue what the formats are. They’re just looking for something to hate because they don’t believe the same as the hater. Somehow, they’re a con or doing something illegal which says even more about the hater having no clue. Once upon a time we just agreed to disagree and left it at that…no criticism, no hate.

I will attempt to describe the way K-Love and Air1 find success. First, they are not just a radio station. Yes, they are music formats jocked by primarily major market radio pros executing a format. No, there’s no preaching on the station. I don’t think I’ve ever heard them imply you need to be Christian. They just don’t talk religion because there are so many flavors.

For a person that wants a positive experience on a daily basis, these formats give out constant uplifting lyrics to keep the mind focused on the positive. No politics, no fire and brimstone. It’s like the negative parts of life vanish. Nothing negative. Just catchy songs with easy to recall lyrics and easy to sing along to songs back to back. It’s akin to Top 40. All the songs are known and positive.

When the listener goes to church, they likely sing the same songs in the service.

Even the air talent sounds much more secular than not. They do bits. They take callers. They talk about daily things you’d have happen in your life. It’s very comfortable and stress-free.

Without having to say, there is the implied urgency that these are commercial free stations that survive by donations from listeners. Most listeners give about a dollar a day. They do say those that donate keep things going and more people are discovering the stations thanks to their gift. Since the stations played at a place I worked, I know they might talk about some listeners such as the lady that was going to the hospital almost daily fighting cancer and listened to the station. She said it kept her positive at a time all she could think about was negative.

Radio’s typical music formats do not have this same appeal, and never have. Not even classical has this depth of organic support. This is radio that is part of your daily lifestyle, not a station you listen to. It’s not quite like prying your smart phone from your hands forever but it’s not far off either. The attachment is not just the station, music and jocks. It’s more like the coffee that starts your day.

Classical is a close second since classical listeners feel their station is an oasis among the radio desert (that's a quote). They don’t want to imagine life without their music. Even so, their numbers and expectations mean support varies. The truth be told, so many classical stations are not ‘good’ to many classical music lovers but better than nothing. So many tell me to be 100% music without news and other elements other than what is going on in the arts community. Stations doing this seem to do best. Playing movements as the format is not the way to go but I admit it works for reaching younger demos that are sorely needed.

Back to K-Love and Air1. It’s not the station, format or jocks. It’s part of daily life that listeners perceive as a tool for a good day. Until other formats can replicate this, it will be tough to make it on listener’s donations. And if you think they’re just a bunch of radical right wing Christian nut jobs, there are people of other religions that like the positive vibe too and even those that are not churchgoers are avid listeners. In fact, lots of moms like it for their young kids. And the kids seem to like it too.

That’s the aim of K-Love, Air1, Way-FM and the others. They want to be a station for as many as they can get without any ‘membership’ requirements like being Christian or going to church or being a part of a certain political party. It’s certainly working for them.

Finally: I find the formatics interesting but the format is not my preference and no button on my radio is set for K-Love or any of the others. I listened and learned because a place where I worked part-time played Way-FM and Air1.

Doesn't work for me.

Not my church. Occasionally someone sings that kind of music as a solo with the same type instrumental arrangements, or maybe the choir sings some of the songs with a piano. But where I go, it's more like BBN. Maybe the occasional "hymn" sung by the congregation, with the organ or piano, would be heard on Air1.

Here's a good analysis of why Contemporary Christian Music works, done by someone who dislikes it. Basically it's purposely designed to be bland and easy to sing along to. It's like an arena rock torch ballad, except without the killer guitar solo -- they'd call that "overplaying".

The EMF stations are not my cup of tea but as had been said they are well executed formats. What continues to be odd though is all the hate (generally from the "we must be tolerant of everyone" left) when EMF buys a signal. That property is for sale to anyone who wants a radio station. EMF is merely one of the few left who are looking to buy.

At least they're not a blatantly anti-CCM church like some churches are.

I wish they were. During the pandemic we were in the parking lot and recorded music was used as we sat in our cars.

There was some of the good kind of music, but some Sundays there was mostly the other kind.

I mentioned this to the pastor (who is no longer our pastor, and we don't know why he quit) and he said he didn't like it either. And yet he was outside with that noise blasting. He said when I asked that there were some who wanted to keep on including that kind of music when we went back inside. Didn't happen. Some of those who supported that music have been missing lately. However, there was the possibility of people leaving over the denomination not making a commitment to following the Bible. I'll let you guess what the big issue was.

I know we've gone through this in other threads but remember that just because you don't like it doesn't make it bad. There are too many churches that have split over the music when there are a lot bigger issues.

It seems more likely that the average listener doesn't contribute at all but the average contributor contributes about a dollar per day. Even that seems high to me!

Most of the contributors are in the $30 a month category.

They operate like every other station , they run programming they think will get them the desired P1

And instead of selling the spot load to advertisers, they keep all of the inventory for themselves and use that time to ask for donations.

Love them or hate them they are doing something right because they just keep on buying stations, including today's announcement they are buying a bunch of Port Broadcasting stations and translaters in the NH Seacoast region.

No different than the good old days when Department stores owned stations, and not only did they sell the radios, they promoted their stores offerings too.

and to add to my previous post, the Port Broadcasting AM's and translators were bought for under $700,000, the programming cost is near zero as all you do is feed the national programming and insert legal ID's where requires, and that is done somewhere else and easily programmable since they use a clock format.

So their big expense is the internet connection they are using to send the feed to the transmitter sites, the cost of the transmitter site and upkeep, and a few other odds and ends.

How long does it take them to recoup $700K net from their faithful listeners?

Sure beats the $1.75 million EMF paid for the former WBOQ, granted Tanger took a bath on that one getting a fraction of his purchase price back, but WBOQ covers a lot more ground too

I've never listened to this station, and I come from a place and a culture that doesn't have this kind of broadcaster. I read this thread, and tuned in to sample the music.

All I've heard for the past hour is pleading for cash - "we just need five more people to pledge $30 a month", over and over and over. It's well-done, it's professional, but I don't think I could listen to this even if I was a deeply religious person.

Might be pledge drive time, though I have not checked either of the EMF services to confirm. Usually any appeals for donations are quite limited and unobtrusive.

Our local NPR station in Houston is having a pledge drive right now, so not confined to religious broadcasting.

They SOUND secular because they ARE! Skip Mahaffey is an award-winning secular DJ who has worked at top-rated stations in Dallas, Tampa, and other big cities. He knows what he's doing.

It seems when they do pledge drives, there is a matching amount requiring so many donors to come in during the time frame attached to that 'match'. There's a company that is hired to conduct the fundraising and handle collections (at least with some stations like KSBJ). Air Talent is coached while fundraising. The formula they use works very well and it lasts a few days. I'd punch the button to the next station myself but I suppose if the station was more than just music to me I might call in a donation.
