Is WBZ AM finally showing its age ?
I sure hope not. It seems they are trying hard to adapt with TikTok and not so much serious news. I don’t like the morning show. It’s a little too much. But I think many of the anchors try to toe the line between being relevant and more light hearted while also doing what they do best. Not easy for them.

Their former sister KCBS-AM is at no. 1 in San Francisco. Unfortunately, they are owned by Audacy, which is in enough hot water.

I've heard the iHeart as a company is pushing TikTok. Just don't think of much cross over between the demographics of WBZ 1030 listeners and TikTok users.

WBZ 1030 is tied for #8. OK, it's usually around #5 but I don't think that's alarming. It's tough for an AM-only station. Right off the bat, you have a large number of people who simply won't listen, no matter how good the product. But all of iHeart's FM stations in Boston do well. So there's no obvious choice for an FM simulcast. Considering WBZ 1030 is one of the best billing stations in Boston, does iHeart bite the bullet and sacrifice WBWL or WJMN to give it an FM signal?

I'm also taken aback at how the 18-34, 18-49 and 25-54 ratings are so uniform! Why are young people listening to Sports Radio WBZ-FM and Classic Rock WZLX? Why are older people listening to KISS-FM Top 40 and WBQT Rhythmic Contemporary? Shouldn't there be SOME different radio choices between people of such different age groups?

Yesterday someone here mentioned his not unfounded dislike for the 'BZ morning show. I don't know who the producer is, but that's where the fault lies, IMHO.

I think Jeff Brown is doing the best he can with what they hand him, and he's being handed a lot of pop culture fluff; e.g., anything about Taylor Swift must be reported! And Lori Grande really puts her heart and soul into making the Traffic on The Threes reports something I enjoy listening to. And I'm not even a commuter.

Too much sports, too many local actualities with speakers who mumble, a too heavy reliance on reports from WBZ-TV, too much stuff I don't really need to know, and the producer(s) seem(s) to cull this even from the CBS News feeds.

I'm guessing that Jeff was not given the "authority" that Gary Lapierre exercised over The 'BZ Morning News. No, I think it's in the hands of a couple of young TikTok'ers.

If their audience is tuning away, it's not a surprise.

Now, not withstanding all I've written above: To the one who posts the age demos for the top 5-6 stations: why include only those demos which favor the FMs? Boston has two powerful AMs in WBZ and WRKO. Maybe they don't make the top 5-6 in the demos shown, which (conveniently) end at age 54, so I believe they're being ignored in the report.

@nowradioguy I agree with you. Jeff and Lori are first class at what they do. It is the content and the pace of the show which makes me turn the dial. Later in the day it is easier to listen to Ben, Laurie and Nicole. There is more fluff but they are better at covering more news. We will never have the days of Anthony Silva and Gary LaPierre again. But WBZ is still an institution. I hope it stays around for a long time.

Are you suggesting that The Bull and JAMN are “doing well”?
Yes, quite well.

The Bull is an inferior signal, with a 65 dbu signal that only covers about 60% of the market, yet is a top 15 biller with low expenses.

Jamn' is tied around 8th in revenue, and is the 3rd highest iHeart revenue producer.

Of the top 14 billers, 6 are iHeart, 4 are Beasley and 4 are Audacy each of the three has about 30% of market revenue.

I hope it outlives me!

But they should stop trying to reach the TikTok/Instagram age group, which doesn't really listen to radio anyway, let alone to an AM station that's primarily spoken word. Else they will succeed in driving away many decades-long loyal listeners.

That's an improved signal on 101.7. If I remember correctly, when it was WFNX, they had to protect an iHeart station to the south. When iHeart bought the frequency, they then removed the protection to increase the signal strength. Correct me if I'm wrong.

It’s improved over what it was when it was WFNX, but still inferior to all the competing full power stations that transmit from either the Pru or Newton/Needham.

WBZ’s tik tok coverage won a Murrow award and is reaching a new audience at a time when their (very) old audience is, uh, getting smaller. I don’t understand the suggestion that they drop the tik tok thing. Have you seen Matt Sheerer? WBZ would be lucky if he didn’t end up on CNN or something. That kid is excellent.

Tiktok is fine. Social media is necessary these days. Matt is funny and does great reports. Not questioning that. It is important to remember there are more than just one age group who listens. All fluff all the time isn’t what we need.

I guess you haven’t seen the TikTok page. It ain’t all fluff.
