The CW 2023-2024 season thread

I cannot wait to see who is getting CW affiliation for this season given that KBCW and KMAX would no longer air CW programming because one of them was that the LIV Golf tour put CBS in violation of the PGA contract with CBS Sports.

KRON
KTXL 40.2
WPHL-TV
WGN-TV
KUSI-TV
WTTA

All of this is because Nexstar owns these stations in these markets.

However Pittsburgh, Detroit, Seattle, Atlanta are unknown where CW is going given that there is no Nexstar owned/managed station in those cities.

Here is the Current profile of the CW.
Having read the article, this move by Nexstar isn’t going well with the studios, the people who had success with the shows that ran on the network and the affiliates who are concerned about the future and the ratings across the board. Not sure if this strategy of adding imports, unscripted content, and LIV Golf will win over audiences.

The CW in Des Moines Iowa has already pre-empted the LIV Golf so if they continue down this road and make it a My Network TV type network I don't think it will continue on channel 23.

My Network TV still airs but not as a network but as a 2 hour service preempting 2 hours of programming on H&I which are the first 2 Star Trek shows.

Translation: if costs aren’t cut to the none, they’re gone.

I have to say the bottom line is going to be essentially a cheap programming service airing bottom of the barrel. A Canadian acquisition with no recognizable stars? A cancelled AMC series that had poor ratings? A British comedy with different comedic sensibilities? Saudi golf? And a “noisy” (but rumored to be scripted) dating series they think is “loud”? None of this will ever set the world on fire. There will be no “emotional attachment” to quote Mr. Schwartz. It will will however fill Nexstar’s pockets though, with the CW probably going the way of Ion and MyNetwork by 2025.

Sounds like they they are just blowing crap out of their mouth. If I was an investor and pouring my money into this I would pull out. I wouldn't put any money on any of this stuff. Their taking stuff from other countries and putting it on their network than calling it a CW original is not going help anything. Some of these shows have already had 2 seasons on the air in Canada.

American made original programming is what the CW should be. It don't have the best programming and the ratings isn't great but none of the broadcast networks are like they were 20-30 years ago.

They might as well make it into a mynetwork tv or ion type network or cut their losses and give it back to the affiliates and make them independent networks. The shows that are on this fall the only one I will watch is Whose Line is it Anyways? And in 2024 the only one I will be watching is Walker. Once those shows are done The CW is done too.

The CW was a cash furnace, so something had to change. Were it not for CBS and WB funding it as a loss leader all these years, the network would have folded years ago (hence why they wanted out).

Nexstar is trying cheaper programming to make the network profitable again. Will it work? Who knows. But what was being done before wasn't working, as they had several shows that would have viewership in the thousands but cost millions to make. There are VERY few shows out there "setting the world on fire" and "causing emotional attachment" these days, especially on a wide scale.

Will they become the next Ion or MyNetworkTV? Who knows. But both of those are profitable, so even if they did I'm sure Nexstar would be happy. I don't see a particularly bright future for ANY broadcast network in today's world, so I think if this even remotely works we'll probably see this model of shared programming roll out to more broadcast and cable networks in the future. Hell, we already see some shows like Beavis and Butthead being touted as "new" on Comedy Central despite being released on Paramount Plus MONTHS ago. Could we see an all new episode of Star Trek Discovery on CBS in the future?

What I wonder more than anything is, will we see other broadcasters opt out of affiliation with The CW?

The sitcoms look good I'm checking out FBoy Island I think The CW should air seasons 1 & 2 at 8PM leading into season 3 even if they have to edit some stuff out being on HBO Max. I knew Walker was going midseason because of the writers strike maybe even All American maybe delayed as well.
