KPNW played “Bad Habits” by Ed Sheeran.

It feels weird to be on the other side of the music conversation for the first time ever. Usually I’m the one agreeing with a post that references a song that doesn’t fit the format. In this case, I don’t have a problem with this song getting some airtime. I’ve always thought that Ed Sheeran is pretty good (compared to most pop stars). I also feel that “Bad Habits” has a fairly universal appeal between formats. It’s alternative and pop at the same time. If they start airing Katy Perry and Maroon 5 then I agree, it wouldn’t make any sense on AAA.

They might move to Modern AC but just as 98.9 KPNW instead of “Click” with the slogan probably changing to “Seattle’s Modern Music from the 80’s, 90’s and Today” or something like that such as “Modern Music” if the ratings continue to get bad.

If it does move to a Click 2.0 station (either Modern AC or a hybrid of Modern AC/AAA) they might tweak 92.5 to a Rhythmic CHR becoming more hip hop/R&B heavy while keeping some of the hit music they usually play with the same slogan and voices (and some of the same personalities) to get the station to avoid overlapping with the format and due to no Rhythmic CHR station in the market which is due to KUBE flipping to Sports. They could however just become a rhythmic heavy CHR dropping the pop/rock acts and adding some hip hop, rhythmic pop, and dance titles to the playlist to the playlist just to avoid overlapping with a “Click 2.0” format since it does have high ratings in the market and KUBE failed at the very end of its format.

It wouldn’t. If that happens the station would also compete with stations like KBKS, KPLZ, and KSWD in addition to KNDD and KEXP. Then they would probably have to change their slogan to something like “Modern Music” and might decide to bring back “Click 98.9” as well as the “KLCK” call letters. They might just go to Modern AC with the same slogan and branding if ratings continue to be bad. A Click 2.0 would be pop/alternative hits from the 80s through today tbh. They aren’t a Click 2.0 just cause they played that song since they definitely are not right now.

No absolutely not. With that being said, they incorporate music from 107.7, and that music fits just fine. I wouldn’t be put off by being Ed Sheeran on an alternative radio station. Some people might complain, but it’s not a bad fit from a programming standpoint.

I think it would be the definition of insanity for there to be a Click 2.0. They have a great deal of potential with their current AAA approach. If it falters, they don’t need to further split the AC and CHR pie and cannibalize their own portfolio.

They could continue to adjust the AAA music if they don’t want to do that and cause MOViN to become more focused on Rhythmic Pop/Dance hits with the pop/rock hits it plays being dropped (though most of the pop/rock hits are known to be on KBKS instead of KQMV even though “Click” is gone. They may not flip to Modern AC as KPNW especially since they don’t want to hurt the other two stations and they have had low ratings when “Click 2.0” was around.

The station played one song by Ed "he's never off the air" Sheeran, and suddenly we're rebranding and flipping to Rhythmic CHR?

Um they aren’t flipping to Rhythmic CHR on 92.5 rn. They are still CHR. Just said it’s a possibility if Click 2.0 comes to 98.9.

If they bailed on the AAA experiment and went HOT AC, moved KQMV to a more rhythmic lean, they could really pick up an open lane. So strange that Seattle doesn't have a great HOT AC like KBIG in LA or KSTP in Minneapolis. Three stations battling it out to win the AC crown and two in Top 40 makes no sense when there's a wide open lane in HOT AC. Though, I'm sure they'll give KPNW a solid chance before calling it, especially after hiring legacy Seattle air talent.

Like others have eluded…if any changes are made to go more mainstream, Hubbard needs to be careful that they don’t go too far into KRWM’s lane. WARM has enough problems right now dealing with the Sound and no longer is the dominant AC in the market. Wonder if the folks in Factoria are second guessing fleeing from the Country format….

Any smart new station launches and then adjusts. There is clearly a lane for a HOT-AC in Seattle, so why not build a AAA that leans a bit HOT-AC? Because KPNW played Ed Sheeran doesn't mean they aren't a form of AAA. Ed Sheeran is played on several AAA stations, so are Adele and Lizzo, but that doesn't mean they are flipping AC or CHR. Just means the station may be leaning into the open AAA-HOT-AC lane in Seattle. Now if they play KOKOMO something is amiss...

If there weren’t already stations like 94.1, 101.5, or perhaps even 106.1 out there, Hubbard might aim KPNW in an AC direction. It doesn’t make sense to go too far down that road when that market is split into this many slices, and I don’t imagine they want to cannibalize their own stations either.

AAA is still a smart move in my opinion, as it has the capacity to pull listeners away from 107.7 and KEXP. At the same time, it can pull listeners from classic rock and classic hits who are looking for something a little different. They’ve clearly got a vision, and they’ve invested in some excellent talent to help it get there. And certainly, they can mix in some music that could potentially overlap. They’re not going to play Katy Perry or Maroon 5 though. I think they know better than that.

I could see 92.5 taking on a bit more of a rhythmic lean, but I suspect if they do that it won't be all that noticeable. I would say that 98.9 is still trying to find its lane and will continue to tweak for several months. Expect to hear more stuff on 98.9 they likely would not have played at launch.

I've launched dozens of stations, and the format was planned and perfected before going on the air. I have never had to "adjust" after the launch; that means you did not "get it right" on the first try.

That song sucked. I hope they don’t devolve into Click 2.0. No Katy Perry, Maroon 5 or any of that crap please. Thank you.
Sure tests well with certain demos the station’s going after, and Ed’s also a AAA artist (yes, I’ve heard Lego House and A-Team, multiple times actually, on such stations when his career was taking off here in the States).
