NBC’s ‘Meet the Press’ Shakeup Puts Chuck Todd in Jeopardy

That may have been more of an issue in the 1940s when church attendance was around 70%. Now it's down to under 40%.

But the reason is to find a time when it wouldn't conflict with football or other sports.
I'm not sure who watches Meet the Press and there others other than pundits and extremely online political junkies.

Today, just about everyone is a pundit. But in terms of sales, the networks say the audience is similar to evening news: older men.

Something to keep in mind; the Sunday AM political talk shows are more than just talk shows. They're technically considered current affairs programming, and count for a portion of the station(s) public/current affairs requirements.

For some reason, I keep getting feeds on Facebook from conservative sources that Chuck Todd is in jeopardy. A new one pops up every week or two. They cite that Todd's weekday show on MSNBC was moved to NBC News Now, the streaming NBC News site, clearly a sign his star is falling. But several NBC people have been moved to that site to give it a boost, such as Joshua Johnson. I don't think it's a come down to go on NBC News Now. NBC knows people who are cutting their cable TV ties will find their way to NBC News Now for their news fix.

So I'm not taking these rumors of Todd's imminent ouster seriously. I think he does a good job. Does he go easy on conservative politicians? Certainly. But he'd probably have a hard time booking Republicans if he didn't do that. They know they can get positive press on conservative TV networks. So why go someplace where they'll face tough questions?

But Meet The Press, Face The Nation and This Week all need Republicans to come on their shows. Hence the need to avoid challenging anyone's dubious answers. Larry King and Barbara Walters made an art form of this. Ask a tough question when you get a hot guest. Then when they tell you the moon is made of Swiss cheese and the earth is flat, you let it pass.

But Meet The Press, Face The Nation and This Week all need Republicans to come on their shows.

It's not an accident. There was a story about that a few weeks ago:

They have decided there's no upside to talking to the media.

Well, when they get pressed with facts it never goes well for them. Better to stay in their friendly echo chamber.

The GQP doesn't even feel the need to debate. In my state, it's unanimous. They figure "I have an R beside my name, it's in the bag". You'd think a guy like DeSantis would need to attract crossover voters and be moderate, but apparently the MAGAs who fled the blue states for the absolute right to catch and spread a deadly and disabling disease will give him a comfortable margin.

Nice, creative spin on the classic "leaving to spend more time with family" explanation.

Will he turn up on CNN after his presumed non-compete terms are up? For better or worse, his 'both sides' approach would seem to fit in with Zaslav's philosophy for that news network.

This basically puts all four major network news shows under female anchors. This Week on ABC has Martha Radditz, Face The Nation is Margaret Brennan. Fox News Sunday is Shannon Bream. Now Kristen Welker will host Meet the Press.

It'll be interesting to see if or how NBC, or any other network for that matter, potentially uses Todd during the runup to the 2024 Presidential election. I personally wasn't a big fan, even back when Chuck was doing political analysis when Tim Russert was still with us.

Good point, and they seem to use their name talent to create other projects such as Rachel Maddow's podcasts and books. We may see him less on air and more creating multi-media content.

Thanks for this. I thought he was leaving NBC but after reading the article again I see that's not the case, he's just leaving Meet the Press and expected to stay on as chief political analyst.

Chuck Todd ruined Meet the Press! Tim Russert was excellent I wish Tim Russert‘s son takes over
Luke Russert left NBC News almost 10 years ago.

That isn't to say he couldn't be brought back to NBC, but the fact that he hasn't turned up elsewhere in journalism suggests he has no desire to fill his father's role.

Not really. George Stephanopoulos is still the primary host of ABC's This Week.
