ESPN could decide to have their weekday ESPN Radio shows have solo hosts (instead of co-hosts) and have each of them run four hours.
You could probably get rid of at least half of the network's radio hosts that way.
“To see what ESPN Radio has become in the last 15 years, as a dinosaur has died in front of us, unable to keep up with changing times, changing platforms, changing audiences, I was made sad in a way that made me want to reminisce about what sports radio used to be and no one wanted to do it with me,” Le Batard said in response to ESPN Radio reportedly canceling its morning show.
I listened to Dan (not Don) on ESPN Radio's Hartford affiliate quite a bit about a decade back, and enjoyed it, though not as much as I loved Tony Kornheiser's show on the same station in previous years. Just enough sports, just enough pop culture, just enough silliness. Now most sports radio, outside of ESPN, is all about locker-room talk for the sloping-forehead, dragging-knuckles crowd, while ESPN Radio is all about promoting the sports and superstars ESPN wants to promote and pounding sports' (and society's) issues into the ground.
To be transparent, though, LeBatard has his own axe to grind with ESPN Radio in a way, as he himself separated from them in 2021. Prior to that he'd found himself in hot water a few times for making political comments and statements on his program.Dan LeBatard comments on ESPN Radio cuts:
IMO Van Gundy is a loss. I enjoyed his commentary througout the NBA Finals just a few weeks ago.Jalen Rose and Jeff Van Gundy let go.
Actually, the best sports talk hosts are guys who know how to do "bar talk". Not just sports, little pure statistics, and lots of weekend-on-the-porch with a beer or man cave chatter. Politics, particularly political gossip, rumors and scandals, is a big part of that.Probably should have left out the politics and stuck to sports.
And sometimes sports and politics are intertwined. Should the A’s move to Vegas and what kind of government ballpark subsides should keep them in Oakland or allow their move to Vegas (or elsewhere?) What if anything should team ownership or leagues do when a player kneels during the national anthem. How do you improve diversity (if you think it needs to be done) in team leadership and ownership? How do you handle a player that refuses to wear a special patch on team Pride events? Do you handle it the same if a player refuses to wear a special patch on Jackie Robinson day?Probably should have left out the politics and stuck to sports.
Politics decided to get involved in sports.Probably should have left out the politics and stuck to sports.
Still have Mark Jackson. TNT can pick up Van Gundy then have both of Van Gundys. To be transparent, though, LeBatard has his own axe to grind with ESPN Radio in a way, as he himself separated from them in 2021. ESPN at times hires on-air people that put politics ahead of sports. Two examples: Rush Limbaugh and Keith Olbermann.Politics decided to get involved in sports.
