ESPN 98.7 FM to be no more come August 31, 2024

$50 million? We'll see. When it comes right down to it there won't be as many serious buyers as some may think. That's a lot of ROI to have to make up.
There are several known parties interested in the former Emmis properties, including SBS and Urban One. And Mr. Cat is as wild card and if he bought an FM, he won't be looking as much at multiples as at opportunities.

"Spanish" is not a format, it is a language. There are as many... or more... identifiable formats in Spanish as there are in English. Since the total market is now 30% Hispanic and even at a higher percentage in 18-49, we can expect more entries in that field. Since the current wave of immigration is predominantly Hispanic, there is even more reason to consider other formats in that language in New York.

Yeah, for a market its size, New York is underserved when it comes to Spanish FMs. Compare it to LA.

Granted, New York, due to being a majority Dominican market, is hard to program for.

It's not a majority Dominican market. It is, however near 50% Dominican among 18-49 Spanish dominant persons.

The largest group overall is Newyorican, with four resident generations of persons from the Island or descendants of the Marine Tiger mass migration of the 50's and well into the 60's.

There are now over a million Mexicans or Mexican Americans, but their legal status makes it hard for Nielsen to measure them. There is also a huge Ecuadorian community, as well as a huge variety from everywhere else.

It's no harder to program for Dominicans than for any other group. The station I set up, structured and hired for in 1986 is still going strong at an absolute #1 in La República: Z-101 and El Gobierno de la Mañana.

I'm speaking from the perspective that New York is the only market in the US where Dominicans are the majority among Spanish dominant people. This makes it unique among radio market. It is neither Pan-Caribbean like the Northeast or Florida nor mostly Mexican like the West or Southwest.

What do you mean by Northeast? New York is part of the Northeast. Do you mean Boston?

Exactly. Most of the Espn station is going out of business are stations that are competing with local sports stations like “The Fan”
That isn't accurate. There are many areas where ESPN-branded stations are the only game in town with limited local programing. What you're implying is a scenario unique to a large market such as New York.

And ESPN Radio is not going out of business.

Never said that. Majority of Espn National stations that are in major cities competing against local stations leave the market or downgrade to a translator or move to am

I say make 98.7 a rock station come august of 2024

I don't think anyone will pay $50 million to make it a rock station.

I wonder if Audacy would buy it and move The Block and sell off 94.7. Probably not since 98.7 asking price is $50 mill.
Formats NYC does not need…ROCK, COUNTRY, CHRISTIAN, SPANISH, SPORTS, NEWS, OLDIES AND URBAN

Audacy doesn't have $50 million. They can't get $50 million for 94.7. So it would be a loss.

It may not be a bad option for a one-station owner wanting a format without competition. I’m thinking of LA’s Go Country 105.

The reason you have GoCountry is that the owner bought that station 60 years ago. It's all paid off. Nobody is going to spend $50 million for music format as a one-station owner

The rest of the Northeast. Boston, Philadelphia and other northwest markets... except for DC maybe, as that area is also unique with the Salvadorans.
But the big Salvadoreño migration to DC was in the later 60's and early 70's, and then again in the early 80's during "El Problema". Most 18-49's are second generation now.

It will work in the embedded markets, but not the full metro survey area book.

Different market. LA has no embedded markets that can stand on their own.
