People with CarPlay are mostly just listening to AM/FM radio

Commercials are very annoying no matter what station they are on. There are annoying DJs too on like Top 40 stations. At least Christian station DJs aren’t as annoying as the secular ones.
Please, clarify that “annoying” is your opinion. Many listeners like DJs you don’t care for or stations would not hire them. At least in the bigger markets, stations research music and playlist as well as the talent

In my opinion, I want less “witty banter”. Either have a conversation or don’t. Not everyone can be Howard Stern and do a bit on the radio.
 
There have been ads since the 20's when radio began, just like there have been listeners complaining about all the ads. Heck, most of the larger market radio stations were owned specifically to advertise the parent company's products.
Nothing has changed.
Bullsh!t. The ads have gotten more obnoxious in the last decade or two. There's little-to-no creativity, just hard sell, with crappy sound quality, low-talent voices and disclaimers sped up digitally to make them undecipherable. There were always obnoxious ads, but when you listen to old airchecks you hear the creative ads, the funny ads, the ones that included actual information that the listener/consumer could use, live reads from friendly or humorous personalities. And they didn't come in twelve-packs.

Somebody has to pay so that you can listen to free radio. That's the bottom line. We sell them the time because that's the only revenue source we have. The advertisers produce the ads. But its their time. They paid for it. If listeners paid for radio, it would reflect their tastes and their interests. The ads you hear are based on the audience the station attracts. If you listened to a different format, the ads would be very different. By describing the ads you hear, you're telling me which stations you listen to. When you listen to old airchecks, they're probably for a different format, aiming at a younger audience. If you listen to a station aiming at that same younger audience, you'll hear less obnoxious ads.

Remember even back in the 80's and 90's the screaming voiceover repeating phone numbers many times? How about when they used to scream at you to GO NOW NOW NOW! We used to get a lot of complaints about those spots, but obviously they were effective for the times. As BigA says, the client is in charge of the spot, not the radio station. Just because you're considered a senior, maybe you're just less tolerant to any ads? Clint Eastwood in Grand Torino comes to mind.

Could be diminished hearing?

As has been mentioned; advertisers now look for 'numbers of impressions', not how many :30's or :60's with a particular station. That, and I'll bet many of the spots that irritate you are national spots.
