Um, most likely 11/10. Usually, they don't flip to Christmas Music during the weekends.
102.9 The Lake. I think they are planning to flip that one to Christmas music on Nov. 10 @ 5 pm. My guess is that they are trying to state that Christmas music is coming soon to Magic. 102.5 The Lake I think is the GSP station for "The Lake" which is also owned by IHeartMedia.
Correct. 102.9 The Lake in Charlotte goes all-Christmas, but fortunately 102.5 The Lake in GSP does not since Magic goes all-Christmas for almost 2 months every year, longer than almost any other AC.
Pretty much. I enjoy Christmas music but there’s a time and place for it. Flipping around Thanksgiving and playing for December is one thing. In Magic’s case flipping at 12:01AM on November 1st and then playing Christmas thru like January 3rd or something is insanity and annoying.
I remember about 10-15 years ago or so they did dual streams online, the main Christmas music stream and they streamed the regular AC format online exclusively. With the way they’re pushing the Audacy app all of the time it seems like it’d make sense to offer the regular format on the app. Magic was the first Audacy station to go all-Christmas last year and the last to change back. Until a few years ago they always shut it off at midnight on 12/26. Shockingly, they’ve only devoted one weekend to Christmas music this year.
There’s talk that Magic is flipping to Christmas tomorrow…or not. Fox Carolina had published this story about Magic flipping, then strangely deleted it:

I have a feeling it’s going to be any time now. Definitely by Friday. That liner has been airing since Thursday with the slowed down “Santa Claus Is Comin to Town”. They can’t afford to have the ratings do their normal Christmas fall where they’re at now…There’s talk that Magic is flipping to Christmas tomorrow…or not. Makes sense considering 98.9 is no longer playing Christmas music. Years ago, technically 97.7 was all Christmas back when it was a translator for Magic. 🤣

First time they did it.
We dont play any christmas music on my station til ldecember 1st and then its just 1 song per hour in lvie dj hours or during locally automated music till dec 10th ramping up to 2 songs. then the saturday and sunday before christmas alogn with christmas day, well air a locally produced radio p[lay or two, maybe a national special... and we go all christmas music at 4pm december 23rd until 5am DEcember 26th.
I have to wonder just how big is their Christmas playlist anyways? Playing the same old Mariah Carey, Wham!, and Ed Sheeran songs multiple times throughout the day is grating.
I seem to recall them a few years back scraping to the bottom of the barrel with digging up Cristy Lane’s Christmas album one Saturday evening closer to the actual holiday itself.
I don’t remember exactly, since it’s been a while, but it seems when WMYI was MY102.5 and went all Christmas every year, WSPA-FM had a much wider seeming playlist (MY wasn’t going to play the dogs barking jingle bells). Granted, that may be 200 songs vs 125, but they seemed to have more variety.
Cristy Lane? Now that’s desperate. I guess the advertisers complained about the repetition 🤣 they’re mentioning sponsors between songs which sounds kind of tacky.
Although I'm disappointed about the switch from 98.9 to 106.3 for Magic (and the Christmas music,) the new News/Talk format on the big 98.9 signal is going to CLEAN UP.
1) it's an election year coming up. Political ads $$$$
2) WGTK is gone so there's no other competition in town
3) the bigger signal gets WYRD-FM into Asheville territory (so see #1 again, as they will get more political ad revenue for that area.) They don't even have to buy "the book" for Asheville to get that money.
