Tampa Ratings October 2023 - FLZ Down Big Time Despite Demise Of Hot 101.5!

Of course the Eagle won’t play them because they are Classic Hits and not Classic Rock. Also most Classic Rock stations probably don’t go the same direction as The Shark anyways.

For 9/14/2023 thru 10/11/2023,

They're only "Classic Hits" in branding. Would you consider Def Leppard, Black Sabbath, Ozzy Osbourne, Poison, Quiet Riot, AC/DC, Twisted Sister, Guns n Roses, etc classic hits?

Same thing could be said for their sister WJGL 96.9 The Eagle in Jacksonville.

Almost all of them released singles that charted in Billboard's Hot 100. Almost all have songs that have had impact beyond their genre. You can't go to a sports event without hearing an Ozzy or AC/DC song. A lot of rock has aged very well.

However the reason for the airplay on classic hits is that the rock based songs test better than the pop. It could be because of what I mentioned above. They also usually add tempo. But the stations that add some rock hits tend to do better in the ratings.

Those demo ranks results for WLLD are both stunning and outstanding.

Has the station *ever* been #1 in persons 25 to 54 or persons 18 to 49 prior to 101.5's decision to ditch CHR?

I wouldn't know for sure, but I'd guess they might have been #1 18-49 on a handful of ocassions in the early-mid 2000s, when the Rhythmic format was red hot nationwide.

We spend a lot of time on programming, what about what the listener hears? It seems for a long time Cox had the best sounding stations and lately something has changed. What are your thoughts about the sound affecting ratings as much as the songs?

I'm a little biased but it could be that way because Ed Allen is no longer around the Cox transmitters anymore.

Maybe Tampa can't support two mainstream Top 40 CHR stations. But surely it can support one.

The format is having a hard time in some places. But in others, it's fine. Z100 NYC #4, KIIS LA #6, KMVQ San Francisco #4, WXKS Boston #5.
Detroit's WKQI is #2 with a 7.2 share. Not sure what they are doing right. WFLZ is could almost brand itself "Oldies 93.3". They are still playing Usher from the early 2000's.

Like when they were Z93 before Power 93?

When Pigs fly. :)

Every current hit station plays throwback songs. It's about trying to reach older demos as well.

Sure, throwbacks, but at 20 years old, a song is an oldie. If you were to go back to 1998, WFLZ would never had played anything from the disco era. They probably wouldn't have touched anything from the 1980s that late in the the 1990s.

I remember in 1997-98 hearing ‘80s songs played on FLZ. It was short-lived though because as soon as Wild 98.7 debuted in mid ‘98, FLZ tightened up and dropped the older songs.

Unfortunately for WFLZ not enough people like the music they are playing. A 2.3 share without a direct competitor is anemic.

If you look at the last 6 months, this book doesn't follow the pattern. I'd like to see a few books before I say they have problems.
