Were the radio towers for KNTB 1480 Lakewood removed?

As I recall, the towers were situated somewhere near Lakes High School. Looking on Google maps, it appears that a new neighborhood was constructed in very close proximity to where the towers formerly stood. For that reason, I assume that this station is off the air for good and that the tower site is long gone. Can anyone confirm?

And before anyone else says it, we all know that KNTB probably had fewer listeners than you could count on one hand. I’m just curious if it’s even still on the air in 2023.
 
I believe that station is operating on an STA with a horizontal long wire at 250W Days/ 65W nights.

Keep in mind that 1460. 1480 and 1490 are involved in some sort of deal to combine 3 bad signals into one somewhat better one, so until that occurs everything is on a temporary basis anyway.

That’s interesting. I remember hearing some news about that, but I couldn’t remember if KBRO and KNTB had bit the dust for good. I wonder what location they’re using for keeping 1480 on the air. There’s literally nothing left of the old site.
 
Iglesia Pentecostal Vispera Del Fin is a sham organization holding almost nothing but licensed and unbuilt, silent or abandoned stations. See for example K20NF-D. License to cover filed, facility never built. There is no signal on the air in Seattle on channel 20 and never has been. Owners/employees at two stations that have Queen Anne towers that supposedly K20NF-D was bult out on have said that this station was never authorized to have facilites there. See also the long thread here on KEJI 91.5 Darrington. Head to Yakima and see if K23PG-D or K28QL-D is on the air. Given this group's history it's likely that 1480 is not on the air yet a license to cover has been filed.

Isn't that the same organization that has 93.7? They seem to not have that hard of a time keeping that on the air, but that's their only good signal.

I think there have been a few issues over the years. Notably being “hacked” a few years ago and accidentally airing the “F*** Donald Trump” song on a loop until someone caught it. But you’re correct, more attention seems to be going into 93.7.

1480 and 1490 are pretty terrible stations to own coverage wise. I’d bet their intention is find a way to make 1490 more viable since you could (in theory) try to market it to Seattle if the signal were stronger. With that being said, I don’t think it’s a realistic goal.

1460 and 1490 are going away, eventually... to make an improved 1480.
It's all in the engineering paperwork in the LMS database
 
An improved 1480 whose license will be canceled two years down the road because the donations aren't coming in. I'd list off at least half-a-dozen AMs that I think will be gone within the next 2-3 years. 1150, 1400/920, 1420, 1620, and 1540 come to mind. No translators, no audience. A shame for KYIZ as the Urban AC format SHOULD have an FM translator. But they didn't apply in the auctions.

not an auction for a translator per se, an application period.. its not like full power commercial signals.

i think 1150 and 1620 stay around awhile longer.. decent/good signals and prob. making money.
 
I’m still not sure if 1540 should close up shop either. They’re the only station I can think of airing Cantonese and Mandarin programming for a good chunk of the day. With the tower site in Bellevue and a growing number of Cantonese and Mandarin speakers in Bellevue and Seattle, it may still have some life.

920 and 1400 are basically done. 1480 and 1490 should be done. And 1460 isn’t looking too promising either.

I think your main question has been well answered by others, but I can confirm that the original towers for this station back when it was KQLA were indeed near Lakes High School -- I grew up near there and remember when those towers went up.

Do you recall what the programming was at the time? Even back in the day, I can’t imagine 1480 getting a ton of listeners.
 
If 1150 wasn't making money, Hubbard would have sent it back to Salem. 1150 isn't that great of a signal, it's spotty everywhere else but the Eastside. But it must get a nice return because they've been doing this brokered format thing for 20 years.

Thanks Ford for the clarification on KXPA 1540. I was wondering if it had gone 24/7 Brother Stair like other Birach stations like WEW and WWCS.

as i said in an earlier post, im pretty sure 1460 and 1490 will be done if 1480 gets its upgrade

To be fair, the coverage of 1540 is pretty abysmal, but it seems possible that there are some Mandarin and Cantonese speakers in king county who are seek out programming in their native language. If you’re looking for this type of programming, it’s the only place you’re going to get it (unless you use the power of the internet).

From my personal experience living just north of the border in the lower mainland of BC, I can confirm that the Chinese language radio stations do okay (and there is more than just one of them).

KXPA runs music of your life standards music as filler.

Its owned by MRBI, multi cultural radio broadcasting, not birach
 
KEST San Francisco (1450) does the same thing, with Music of Your Life as filler. As for 1150, I'm surprised they make any money on the brokered format. Keep in mind - the trend has changed, wannabe 'hosts' and 'influencers' are on YouTube and TikTok now.
