The CW Opts Not To Renew Affiliation Deals With Scripps-Owned Stations In Seven Markets

With WMYD's affiliate with the CW is now will be cut short after nearly 9 months. Now, they could add either the Pistons or Red Wings on WMYD this fall as well as expand local news with WXYZ.
If Bally Sports Detroit do not renew both the Wings and Pistons, both of them would have to leave Bally Sports Detroit and move to either WMYD or WKBD.
If they decide to put the Pistons on Scripps Sports because they carry the WNBA, NWSL, Vegas Golden Knights, Arizona Coyotes (now they inactive), and the new Utah NHL team and put the Red Wings on WKBD because Paramount has carry a series of NHL games this season includes carried 2 Pittsburgh Penguins preseason games, 6 Los Angeles Kings games, and a Dallas Stars game back in December after they were a scheduling conflict on their alternate channel of Bally Sports Southwest. The Pistons could launch a new DTC Streaming Service for fans who live in Michigan, parts of Ohio, parts of Indiana, parts of Wisconsin, and Southwestern Ontario Canada while the Red Wings will be on Paramount plus throughout the state of Michigan, part of Wisconsin, parts of Indiana, parts of Ohio, and parts of Southwestern Ontario Canada.
5 of final 8 Pistons games and the final 3 Red Wings games were on WMYD. The Pistons finish 0-5 on WMYD and finished another worst record in the NBA at 14-68. They are one of three NBA teams will have a 14% chance to win the lottery next month while the Red Wings finished a perfect 3-0 record on WMYD. These final 3 games went to both overtime and shootout and finished their first non-losing season since the 2015-16 season with a 41-32-9 record, tied with the Washington Capitals with 91 points but the bad news is..they missed the playoffs for an 8th straight season.
Any major announcement could be made by either WXYZ, WWJ, or both could be made very soon.

Scripps wanted to sell WPIX in order to complete the Ion purchase. Nexstar had an option to buy back WPIX but instead sold the option to Mission and did the LMA because they've only voluntarily sold two stations in their entire history and don't want to sell anything of their own free will otherwise.
A company like Nexstar has to be told the hard way that there are limits to their incessant want to buy everything.
E.W. Scripps was in the process of getting Ion Networks when that happened.

For Nexstar specifically if Mission gets removed from the license holder for WPIX who gets it is another issue. Which Nexstar and mission owned stations need to be divested so Nexstar and Mission can keep WPIX and get a station in Detroit is an issue here.
Technically Scripps has agreements to program all the stations they sold to Inyo through 2028 including WPXD, with those stations only broadcasting Scripps networks national programming and no local programming.

Do you know what that means for Pistons and Red Wings fans come in the 2024-2025 NBA and NHL season? If both the Pistons and Red Wings leaves Bally Sports Detroit, Best case scenario is putting the Pistons on Scripps Sports (WMYD and WXYZ; might feature in the National ABC games because the NBA is in it final year of their contact. Their and TNT Sports are due set to expire next year) as well as launching a new DTC streaming service called "Pistonvision" and the Red Wings on CBS (WKBD and WWJ) as well as their streaming service, Paramount+. Worst case scenario is putting the Red Wings on Scripps Sports (WMYD and WXYZ; continues to feature in the National ABC games as part of the NHL deal with ESPN, who enter its 4th year this fall) and launchin a new streaming service call "The Ride Live" and the Pistons on CBS (WKBD and WWJ) as well as their streaming service, Paramount+.
This could end their decades on Cable TV and headed to free TV and streaming service.

Consider the timing that the MeTV & WCIU owner Weigel is launching a new subchannel based on "Toon In with Me" block so I expect that WMEU-CD content will merge into WCIU and WMEU might pick up the new MeTV Toon.

That didn't mean Nexstar had to be the company to buy WPIX. Scripps could've sold it to anyone except Sinclair & Gray. Nexstar/Mission just played opportunist (A game not even Sinclair tried to play when they tried to merge with Tribune)
But now that Scri[pps owns Ion, Scripps should be able to buy WPIX back from NexstarMission (Especially if Nexstar insists on keeping Mission under its umbrella) as it would ne a nice compliment to Ion O&O WPXN 31
If Nexstar doesn't act, I can see the FCC taking away stations currently owned by Nexstar/Mission & assigning them to new owners. These would be stations located in places where it would they would "Feel the pain" as it were in the corporate wallet & portfolio
I cite Fox's flirting with the idea of buying KDVR from Nexstar/Mission/Tribune as an example of what I mean
If Nexstar/Mission doesn't act, Fox could find itself getting KDVR for the price of FREE. Another example could be WTTV in Indianapolis, CBS could end up with that one. WPHL in Philadelphia is another. Fox could end up with that one as well as a MyNetwork TV O&O as it would be a nice compliment to Fox O&O WTXF 29

All this would be in an effort to bring Nexstar/Mission in compliance (By FORCE if neccessary) if they don't sell (What is now) The CW's East Coast flagship station & part with Mission as per the FCC's condition to buy WADL 38 in Detroit
It could likely that WADL (if they going back to the CW) could become the new CW East Coast Flagship station if Nexstar sold WPIX to Scripps and drop the CW.
I do not see any practical case for Scripps to buy WPIX, let alone disaffiliate from the CW. Mission and Nexstar are fighting this order and have not even begun the process of finding a buyer, because neither entity sells stations of their own volition.
WPHL is now CW so selling a MNTV affilation rights in Philly along with KRON and WSNN to Fox might be the best option if Nexstar want to sell some of their affiliates to Fox mostly the Tribune ones and some smaller markets like Lexington and Roanoke both with their news departments.
But in the end either Nexstar's rivals or the parent companies of the Big 4 can buy either the Scripps or the Nexstar stations since they're both reached the 39% cap.

Can we stop once and for all referring to My Network TV as a network? It's a 10 hour a week program delivery service and those 10 hours are repeats of cop and firefighter procedurals that you can literally watch anywhere and everywhere else. The shows are sent to the stations that carry it as files and there is zero expectation that any of it be carried live in primetime because that's not even possible.
If MNTV suddenly disappeared (and I wish it would) stations would seamlessly drop in two more hours of paid programs during the overnight hours that the vast majority of MNTV programming airs and virtually nobody would notice.
No station is "looking to grab the MNTV affiliation". It's just not a thing.

Agreed given that Fox itself has renamed their secondary stations after the Primary Fox O&O's like KCOP Los Angeles rename their MNTV affiliate after the primary as KTTV Fox 11+. Basically stations like KCOP, KICU, WWOR, WPWR picks up the preempted Fox shows whenever the primary ones like KTVU, KTTV, WNYW, WFLD has to go to breaking news or carry MLB and NFL games from Fox Sports. Also Fox Television Stations division are putting emphasis on both the Tubi and Fox Local apps for TV's.
