Miami/Fort Lauderdale Power 96 Flips To Rhythmic Throwbacks

Unexpected but long necessary...

While the history of Power supports this, the cume is older and long gone now. What matters is if they realize the huge Hispanic composition of the cume was back in the day. They will do nothing if they don't specifically target Hispanics... that was the basis of Bill Tanner's long hold on the audience with Power.

Where's the Freestyle, Booty Bass, Dance, 10:30 Street Party, DJ Laz & Felix Sama on 4 turntables? If they want to do this right, they have to get on this ASAP to be the Power 96 that once was, not just a generic Classic Hip Hop station with what's left of this brand. If any of them inside that building is reading this, I can help with that. I have quite a few airchecks of that station in this era on cassette, & a wealth of songs that I regularly play on my own syndicated show that screams "Miami".

I agree.

One of the worst moves, IMO, was the move of Power to Mainstream CHR in the 2010s.
Maybe. But many Rhythmic CHR stations were doing it too. WBBM-FM Chicago, KYLD San Francisco, XHITZ San Diego, KLUC Las Vegas. WBBM-FM continues to struggle but the other three were glad they went mainstream.

Of course, the Miami market is unique.

Power 96 competitors are 97.3 hot 105.1 y 100.7 and maybe 99.1 and 103.5
but also in small market 105.5 and 92.7. Will the other markets change also

I keep hoping Tanner will call down from Radio Heaven and will talk 'em into rollin' the real hits of the market and have some excellent talents and some mind numbing promotions, but, that's probably not gonna happen. Those were the days...

If its programmed for Miami, it will work!!!! Most of these “throwback /classic hip hop” stations tend to miss out on ssssssoooooo many jamz and are never programmed locally. Here in Atlanta, our OG 97.9 is not what ATL classic hip hop sounds like.

I agree.

One of the worst moves, IMO, was the move of Power to Mainstream CHR in the 2010s.
Back in the '90s, Power was really programmed to the daypart. Middays and even afternoons, at least when Kid Curry and Don Cox were still there, featured occasional rock-leaning songs. Nights, however, had mix-shows and often had Spanish-language crossovers.

I like this move too. But as someone above noted, it would be great to see the station programmed specifically to Miami.

I noticed that Hot 105 no longer has their Old School weekend and with the exception of the reggae and gospel shows they just play the regular weekday format instead. Ratings, perhaps? Or just not the demo they were looking for?

Let's see how this latest move on Power 96 goes

I always thought something like Pitbulls Globalization on Sirius Xm would have worked great on Power today in place of what theyve been running with for a number of years.. Mixshow heavy, dance, hiphop, pop, reggae, old school.. Closest sound to the original 96.5 style I've heard around today. Thoughts anyone?

The answer has been stated, the 1994-2014 or so sound that targeted "Hispanic" females.
It's really Miami females, the market is just it's own place with it's own feel and sound that Power used to have perfected like no other past and present.
(I think I'm being targeted so don't be surprised if this ends up deleted, I really hope that I'm wrong, what a shame that would be)

Spot on!

This is the Power 96 I remember when I lived in Miami during the '90s.
