No Sale Looming, ESPN 98.7 expected to pivot to Music

Salem is under the limit too, but they have no money, and if they did buy an FM, it would be for their religious format The Fish.

And they have in recent years spun off several of their FMs to other religious broadcasters, and sold the old corporate headquarters campus here in Southern California.

I agree, the Atsinger/Epperson company isn't even looking at this.

They [Cumulus] sold WPLJ and WABC in 2019, saying they couldn't compete for sales with only two stations

That's why I keep bringing up MediaCo as a prospect that can't be ruled out. They also have only two stations, along with a lot of new formats looking for a home with their recent acquisition of Estrella Media's content.

This seems intriguing, if MediaCo has the funds. They have recently started running Estrella's Luna format (Spanish A/C) format on their WBLS HD2. Mediaco also has one of Estrella's regional Mexican formats on Hot 97 HD2. That may be an indication MediaCo would like to get at least one of these on a regular FM signal in this market.

Yes yes! Let's bring back the Spanish AC to the regular FM broadcasting in the NYC area. 🙏

Do you think MediaCo can make alt rock work?

No. They're more likely to go Spanish. Read this:

Salem is in full "sell mode." They announced another sale today in Little Rock.

Don't be so sure it'll be Luna. They'd might wanna go for something a little more popular yet still an unserved niche, like “La Buena 98.7.”
La Buena is the Regional Mexican format MediaCo is running on Hot 97's HD2. I think the DJ's are from their station in Fresno, CA.
Our moderator David Eduardo did opine recently there is a decent chance that 98.7 would get a Regional Mexican format.
Has Regional Mexican ever been on a major FM signal in this area? I know 92.7 carried the genre for a while, but that's not a station which reaches the entire market.

So is everyone implying here that Spanish or religious programming are the only 2 possibilities?

Once again, it depends on the owner. If Jon Bon Jovi or Little Steven want to get into radio ownership, they might go with rock.

But the chances of that are not good. That's why ownership matters.

Some people here - reading between the lines of some earlier posts - appear to believe Family Stations is a likely buyer.

Such a theory certainly seems plausible, especially if Family Stations is still sitting on much of its cash from the sale of AM 1560 WFME's real estate.

What a horrible outcome that would be for fans of mainstream radio.

I consider the K-Love format to be mainstream. Recent AQH share data for 95.5 is pretty close to what WPLJ's Hot AC format earned the better part of its final decade on the air.

The programming Family Stations runs is far from being mainstream.

Especially since this same thing happened after WPLJ went off the air

Count me among those who still thinks Cumulus had little choice but to sell. They also sold their lone FM in Los Angeles, and their AM is mostly there to clear WWOne talk programming.

No one but EMF had the 💰 to buy it. That has always been my chief gripe about them; because they are non-commercial, they've always had main studio waivers (before that was done away with completely) and they have a ton of listener "donations" sitting around waiting to be spent on the next station acquisition ... which they pay zero taxes on.

If EMF wants a station, you might as well not bother to bid.

And, as BigA says ...

It depends on the POV: It's one less station competing for declining revenues.

That is the only reason I have to appreciate seeing a station go non-comm.
