Los Angeles Radio Ratings: July 2024

I'm just amazed no one mentioned the Dalai Lama.

Dr. Don Rose, KFRC, in the 1970s:

“Then there was the time I was in Tibet and I climbed the mountain to see the Dalai Lama.

I said “Oh great one, tell me: Why am I here?”

He said “Beats me. I told them to send up a girl.”
You know you're just a little too into radio when the first thing I thought of when I read that quote is how, if I were to climb the mountain to see the Dalai Lama my thoughts would be on how it would be a great place for a radio tower with a clear line of sight as far as the eye can see. And of course, I'm thinking the first song played would be Kathmandu from Bob Seger.

Yes, we saw that. Did you have something to add, or was this just a meaningless post with no actual new content?

Wait ... I know ... you work for Meruelo, don't you? 🤔

I think I scanned this entire thread from the beginning, but maybe I missed it. Am I the only one surprised KIIS (current songs) is beating KRTH (old songs) in 25-54?

Having Ryan Seacrest as the #1 morning show in LA has a lot to do with success in that demo. He does well in 25-54.
And it has been three or four decades since CHR targeted teens and 18-24. The money is in women 25-44 for that format.

KRTH PD Chris Ebbott explains his station's secrets to success:

Great quote from Chris:

“A couple of years ago we added some music that, on the surface, was unexpected on K-Earth — things like Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre, The Killers and Foo Fighters,” he says. “We’ve been validated in those decisions by the ratings and what’s happening in pop culture around us. We saw that this was mass appeal for our audience a couple of years ago and reflected that.”

Which, y'know, I tried to explain to the folks having a meltdown here on the board at that time, but...

While a lot of us in Classic Hits programming aren't ready to go quite that far, Chris does make the point that CH has become one of the more "mass appeal" formats and can no longer be defined as being just for Baby Boomers and older.

Even in Albuquerque, where KRKE is 80s-centric (no duh, right?) we have a solid 25-49 core demo. If that isn't mass appeal, what is?
