Local TV Stations Still Pushing To Reclaim 10 PM Hour From Broadcast Networks, Top Exec Says

I remember we had a thread over this and it revolved around Comcast inc protecting the Peacock app when that happened. It does not shock me to hear this. Also we seen this especially with Network O&O’s like local Paramount owned stations with CBS affiliations like KCAL, KOVR, KPIX all have a 10 pm newscast via CBS News app local news section. It’s about attracting viewers to their respective apps. Also the ones owned by Hearst, Gray, Sinclair, Nexstar, Tegna, Scripps we were uncertain on how they would respond to the changes at that that time.

It should be pointed out that technically KCAL is not an affiliate, although on at least one occasion -- a couple of decades ago -- they did carry the network feed while the primary station, KCBS was airing (I think) a Rams game.

The 10pm newscast is on KCAL, although the 11pm one on KCBS is also branded "KCAL News".

That KOVR 10pm newscast has now been in place for almost 30 years, starting when previous owner elected to carry CBS programming on Mountain Time, but while that started under Sinclair in 1995 and continued under CBS. (KPIX also experimented with that around the same time but ended it in 1998.)

IIRC, the shift originally had something to do with KXTV moving to ABC. But I may well have a faulty memory about that after three decades ...

Yes and multiple events that took place from 1994-1996. In Sacramento specifically it’s more with Disney taking over ABC around the time KXTV got the ABC affiliation and CBS went to KOVR. In other parts of the country like Atlanta, Dallas,Tampa, St Louis, Milwaukee, Kansas City, Phoenix and Detroit it’s the New World Television affiliation deal with Fox that became a factor when Fox Sports was born.

But then again that debate about local TV stations getting the 10pm hour for news is easy to do in large cities like Los Angeles, New York where Nexstar and Fox affiliates have their local newscasts at 10pm. But then again this time it’s about how non O&O’s respond to the reality that there are more viewers on TV apps in the past decade and how they adapt is a factor here. We seen Network O&O’s promote their apps that included local news for certain cities like for NBC Specifically they promoted Peacock and that they can find their local affiliate news there like KNBC, KNTV, WNBC, KNSD, WCAU, WMAQ and WRC’s local news feeds there. Or Fox Local app for local Fox Owned stations newscasts there.

NBC, CBS & ABC aren't giving up the 10:00/9:00 PM hour - PERIOD !!

So they may as well stop trying

And with NBC ALWAYS running over with Sunday Night Football & ABC with Monday Night Football when they have games & College Football, it's really futile because at the end of the day, it's all about the $$$ (And the local stations don't provide that like the leagues & college conferences do)
