John Boy & Billy Ink Renewal

iHM has been whacking a number of its local classic rock AM drive hosts.

Part of me wonders if 106.5's morning show (Woody & Wilcox) will be moved to 99.7?

They just had one of their best books. That would cannibalize one of their best rated stations.

However, Cumulus improved the profitability of 97Rock in Buffalo by moving Shredd & Ragan there from the co-owned alternative station.

This seems like a really dumb move. Why would you drop a strong morning show from its home station after 38 years while continuing to air it in other markets? The ratings are going to drop with whatever they replace it with.

My guess is that the demos in the morning were bringing down the overall station numbers. National sales are less based on those kinds of demos.

John Boy is 68 and Billy is 67. So perhaps the 6+ numbers will drop. But they only matter here.

Legendary morning radio show in Charlotte for sure. Can't think of any other Charlotte station that would pick them up. WXRC picked up Ace and TJ for a while before they moved to Kiss 95.1 and then K 104.7 before getting dropped in their home market as well.

WRFX has underperformed with the current PD. It's not just mornings. WEND seems to be the focus, which is thriving.

JB&B may not be pulling the numbers that they used to, but the problem becomes what do you replace it with? Look at how bad Miguel & Holly are performing on WHQC after they dropped Ace & TJ. I see a similar situation playing out at WRFX.

WXRC would be the only station that might pick it up, but I doubt it. The show is only on rock and country stations, and iHeart owns all the rock stations and WKKT, and Beasley is definitely not dropping Tanner on WSOC.

BigA, you hinted elsewhere at the possibility of iHM rolling out a multi market morning show for classic rock.

Lamont & Tonelli abruptly exited Cumulus (KSAN) yesterday. Might they be headed to iHM?

The other possibility that crossed my mind is Kevin & Sluggo, who recently departed KLOS due to budget cuts.

I think the L&T change happened too recently to be an option. iHeart doesn't have a classic rocker in LA.

But yes, as of now, iHeart has classic rock morning show openings in Boston, Chicago, Seattle, and Charlotte.

Plus Dallas is running an alt show (Woody) in that slot. So either they run Woody in those open slots, or start something new.

West coast based shows don't work well in east coast markets due to time zone differences and other considerations. If they do launch a multi-market show, I hope it's based in Chicago, Dallas, Washington or Boston as opposed to somewhere in the Pacific time zone.

I forgot about DC. Yes another open classic rock open show there. Five major markets. Plus Detroit is running a show from Birmingham.

It would have to be somebody big to compete in all of those major markets.

What about somebody like Joe Rogan? You think he would make the move to radio? He got a lot of attention during the election, has the #1 podcast and appeals to the male heavy classic rock demographic.

WXRC is rock leaning. There used to be an oldies station in Myrtle Beach that ran the show. And by that time it was probably classic hits rather than oldies.
