Paul, my guess is those countries renew their SW listings for the same reason that companies/governments/individuals (like myself) renew their web domains, even when they don't actively maintain them. It's the way to insure that someone else doesn't grab that registration and do something nefarious with it to embarrass the original holder, or even to scam people into sending money and/or exposing personal data.
as best i understand it, you cant register as an organization your not.. and plenty of outlets will use the same frequency in a given day that have nothing to do with each other (MWV is on 9845. and later in the day, so is CGTN)

Not a surprise. He obviously hasn't talked to the president about this. He clearly has other plans for USAGM. Otherwise he wouldn't have taped Brent Bozell and Kari Lake. He wants them to turn VOA into state broadcasting service that everyone is required to watch. Remember that TV screen in 1984?
What he'd like to do is somehow replace NPR with VOA, and have all the VOA reporters only report positive stories about him.
There is a battle going on between Musk and the ideologues. We know what the ideologues want to do with USAGM. They identified the goals in Project 2025.
In any case I would think a shutdown of USAGM shortwave output would be in the works. Whatever your opinion of the far right is, you have to admit they are quite savvy about modern communication platforms and their effectiveness. Musk likely sees shortwave as archaic, irrelevant, and a waste of money.
The only SW output that might be safe is Radio Marti, due to Marco Rubio.
That could be. What I expect is a completely reimagined version of USAGM and VOA in ways never imagined years ago, and are likely illegal.
Where did you see or hear this reported? I see nothing that indicates anything more than redefining international content.
There is no evidence of this. I even wonder if he has any idea of what VOA does or what it did in the past.
The real issue is that nobody listens. For example, the VOA's semi-autonomous Radio Martí Program broadcasts with 100,000 watts on 1180. Of course, there are over 20 stations all across Cuba on 1180 running one of that nation's national networks with an aggregate power of about half a million watts. That is like driving your car into a wall, and then backing up and doing it again and again and again hoping that sometime the solid wall will fall over.
I'm basing my views on what he did in the closing months of the 1st administration. That's where he'll start in part 2.
We know he isn't a student of history, so he knows nothing about it's past or its purpose. When he named Bozell, he said this:

As I said, he didn't choose Kari Lake because of her experience in international TV.
That's something the president knows how to fix. His mission is to attract attention. So far, he's shown that he's good at it.

Again, have you listened to VOA and compared it to the 1st trump and Biden administration? Very little was changed.

Bozell hasn't been confirmed to USAGM yet, so we don't know his plans. But we have years of his writings to get a good idea what he will do.
