MediaCo buying licenses for KTJM/KQQK/KNTE plus KZJL/61

If I may speculate, I wonder if MediaCo will try to convert one of the Houston stations to a different format. All three have been regional Mexican for decades now, right?

Rather doubt MediaCo flips either of the eastern rimshots unless they acquire additional stations in Houston as part of the inevitable next wave of consolidation.

They do need to get rid of KNTE. No usable coverage in Houston metro. A religious operator would likely snatch it up.

"Regional Mexican" is a misnomer. It's a term created by non-Mexican and non-Hispanic record store and music industry people to group together a variety of Mexican music, such as ranchera, norteña, grupera, and, when it surged in popularity, banda.

You can have a norteña leaning regional station. You can have an all ranchera oldies based one. You can have a mostly banda and its derivatives variety of format. And you can have various blends of styles and eras. So there can be a dozen or more identifiable kinds of "Regional Mexican" formats. Even the "Variety Hits" like on KRCD in LA is a form of Mexican Regional.

So, if the MediaCo people like the very different Regional Mexican formats on each station and they are making money, why change? And to what?

Maybe the random long periods of silence on KNTE won’t happen anymore
