My radio experiences began in 1963 and extended through 1997, when my I left radio behind when my career track transitioned to television broadcasting and church video. The radio memories are firmly inscribed, and remain a vital part of who I am — now in my 80s. WBAA at Purdue was my first on air experience followed by a succession of residence hall closed circuit stations, followed then by a new hometown station in Bluffton, Indiana. Then a couple of Lafayette, Indiana, stations during college. Several part time stints at WGLM in Richmond, Indiana, during engineering work-study periods. Most of the 70s were spent at a high school student-run radio station, WJEF. Finally, while employed in media ministry at First Assembly of God in Lafayette we acquired a radio station in 1984 which we renamed WCFY (We Care For You) and which I managed until we sold it in 1997.
Listening to the great AM rock stations in the 60s such as WLS in Chicago and WOWO in Fort Wayne made me aspire to become a rock and roll disk jockey. That wasn’t God’s plan for me, but I got the opportunity to experience radio, if only local, during its golden age. All happy memories.
