Washington DC Washington Ratings Holiday 2025: WTOP Fends Off WASH!

All-news beats out all-Christmas in the nation's capital as WTOP finishes in front of WASH-FM by more than one ratings point.

Speaking of one ratings point: 106.9 The Eagle out of Myersville, MD jumps from a 0.4 to a 1.0, beating out stations like:

Both sports stations (WJFK and WTEM plus their streams)
K-Love (WLVW)
Bloomberg (WDCH)
The Gamut

If you're licensed to Washington, you have no business being beaten by an out of town station.

To be fair, WASH was number one in all the $$$ demos:
In DC, the $$$ demo is made up of the politicians, lobbyists, law firms and government service providers. Age is irrelevant, which is why WTOP is America's top billing radio station. WTOP takes just under a third of the whole market's radio revenue.

New programming VP announced for WJFK:

WSCR Chicago VP/Brand Manager Mitch Rosen joins WJFK Washington DC as Sports Format VP.

He has a lot of work to do. They were once a Top 10 station. Not anymore.

It looks like the Commanders, Nationals and to some extent the Capitals are the ones with the work to do. All Sports doesn’t seem to be a viable format in the DC market right now.

Keep in mind that WJFK doesn't have the Commodores rights. The weakness at WJFK is the daily shows. They need to give people a reason to listen.

I know, but Sports radio does better when a market has winning teams.
Just ask Boston. WBZ-FM (Patriots, Celtics, Bruins) is the nation's #5 billing station. And not far behind is WEEI-FM (Red Sox), somewhere in the top 20 billing stations in the U.S. In Boston, Sports is #1 and #2.

But with so many residents of the DC area coming from other parts of the country to work for the government or a government contractor, loyalty to Washington teams may not be that strong.

Bingo. Notice how all the sports departments on the TV side there either have no sports department or one person working in sports. Very, very weird

You've obviously never lived in DC. The people who live there love their football team. They preferred them under the previous name.
I haven’t. But I was there a few months back. I even went inside the White House. Just odd that sports departments are understaffed there. That’s not even mentioning the cutting of the Post sports department

I think it's more a function of the companies that own those stations than anything related to the government. This administration has fired hundreds of thousands of government employees. It didn't bring in a lot of staffers from outside the city. That was something Reagan and Carter did.

Looks like Key 103 beat WFRE in Frederick for the first time in, maybe ever? The official fall of Fredneck.
This is the first time WAFY has ever reached #1 in Frederick. The last time WFRE was not #1 was Spring 1992 when 103.9 WZYQ was #1.

I would caution the OP to not make proclamations like "the official fall of ..." based on a single ratings period. There is still such a thing as "wobble" in the numbers and it is not outside the realm of probability that WFRE will bounce back in a future period. Maybe even the next one.

It's tongue-in-cheek, because "Fredneck" has been dead for a number of years with the influx of the DC crowd. WAFY has been #1 25-54 a number of times. But, yes, WFRE will likely be #1 again, just as we see other country stations at #1 in other suburban areas. It's just crazy that WFRE was #1 for 34 years and Key breaking the glass ceiling is a big deal.
