WDAS-FM Philadelphia Has A Quiet Storm Show in Evenings

I was surprised to find WDAS-FM, Philadelphia's top Adult R&B station, has a Quiet Storm show. It airs 7 to midnight and is hosted by Adamu Colon. WDAS-FM has always been a legendary Urban AC station, owned by iHeart, in a market that embraces R&B and the Philadelphia Sound.

I thought that Adult R&B - Urban AC stations decided Quiet Storm was too quiet. They don't want to age out of the 25-54 demographic. The Quiet Storm plays softer titles from artists of the past like Marvin Gaye and Teddy Pendergrass. But it also seems to avoid crossover songs which listeners to AC and Classic Hits would know. So the Marvin Gaye song is Distant Lover. The Teddy Pendergrass song is Close The Door. Good songs but neither one am I familiar with.

In a recent report from The Research Director, WDAS-FM was #3 in the 25-54 demo, #2 in 18-49 and #4 in 18-34.

The Teddy Pendergrass song is Close The Door.

They also played Turn Off The Lights. The thing I noticed is they also mix in some recents and currents. So it's not The Breeze.

They mix in recents such as Sza and Bruno Mars. I also see they did some "two for tuesdays." It's a pretty diverse music mix.

My take is that with listening way down after 7PM, they figure a small increase in the nighttime age demo won't hurt them overall.

Here's some history about Quiet Storm and WDAS

It has been running the Quiet Storm for a long time. I don't believe it runs it on Friday or Saturday nights, but that show has been a staple on WDAS-FM for decades. KBLX in San Francisco still runs a show of the same name, but it would seem to have scaled it back. WHUR claims the original Quiet Storm, which will hit its 50th anniversary this year, and may still have a 24/7 Quiet Storm channel on one of its HD signals.

BTW - I'm not surprised you don't know all of the songs it plays. WDAS-FM tests its music on African American females, which you are not.
