Yup- I was incorrect. Thought that the CA legislature followed along w WA and OR in passing law to go into effect should DC choose to enact legisllation. In WA at least if a referendum passes, the legislature must take action on said referendum. Apparently not in CA!Not totally accurate, at least where California is concerned.
The voters passed Proposition 7 in 2018, which authorized the state Legislature to implement year-round DST on a two-thirds vote of both the Assembly and the Senate, and subsequent Congressional approval.
So far, that has not happened, although a bill was introduced in 2024 to put California on year-round Standard Time. It stalled in committee.

1110 New Format

Roger on that, thanks. I remember hearing them in Robbinsville, while camping with some friends. I believe it was on a Friday afternoon and they gave an over-the-phone traffic report, probably for Chattanooga. If I remember correctly, it wasn't a direct patch, that is, it was from a speaker phone with the gal calling from a car, etc. I've got that ID and maybe others from them over the years, 'round here, somewhere...
)I check every few days via SDR. Unfortunately the closest ones are far enough I can only hear anything at night

When i had a very brief foray on air in williston, ND... "it's currently 706am central in williston, 606am mountain in sidney". every time check got a central and mountain time mention because we were ruight on the western and southern cusp of the time zone changes
I made a trip between Orlando and Jacksonville last night, and hitting the scan button in the vehicle, repeatedly 1110 would be picked up and once outside of Orlando proper, the Charlotte station came in as strong if not clearer than WDBO. 1110 sounds strong and clear, except that there is nothing on it. I have been thinking for some time this might not be the first time a really well powered and positioned radio station was mismanaged into irrelevance. WOR under Buckley ownership comes to mind, as does the KSFO and KGO stations with the now (again?) bankrupt Cumulus. Unless Radio One really just has the intention of turning off the transmitter eventually, this situation is just unbelievable.
Checking the radio ratings data this non-professional has access to at Radio Insight, it appears that WBT was the only thing keeping AM afloat in Charlotte Cume-wise. Applying the schooling I have received on the San Francisco board regarding the importance of Cume, many of the reasons why KZAC can't easily be resurrected now apply to 1110. Interested radio geek listeners like me will listen, but I unfortunately bet that for average Charlotonians, the last thing on AM has left the building, and Radio One would have to spend a ton of money to get people to sample whatever it is that they might have had in mind. I am a non-professional, but even I could have done a better job than this. For the real radio people here, if a music cart did not play, I am sure you did not just sit there with dead air. You started talking, hit a commercial, or had a backup cart ready to go. Anything to keep the listeners engaged. But with this redirection to 107 FM loop running still, it is effectively dead air. Some of my audacious ideas like letting high school students have their big showbiz break on 1110 now may not be so crazy if Radio One intends to keep the station on the air. A splash is going to be needed. A simple insertion of satellite fed talk or music is not going to get noticed.
A property that two months ago was getting, I think I saw, a Cume of 200K has gone to nothing. Via mismanagement.
No high school student is going to give a crap about being on AM radio. They don’t know what it is. Even if they knew what it was, they wouldn’t give a crap about being on it. They’d rather be on Star Search on Netflix or do a podcast.
The kids today are content creators, i.e. YouTube, Tik Tok, etc. To them, AM radio is a relic that even their parents don't listen to. Maybe even the grandparents included!
That does remind me that KDKA/Pittsburgh offered a late-night slot to University of Pittsburgh students. It's still on the air.

Getting back to the topic, the key to getting listeners tuning in WBT has to be content. I was thinking about this the other day and since Charlotte has such a large financial and banking presence, it seems to make sense to program business news, such as Bloomberg Radio, and retirement money shows on the weekends, etc. Seems like a potential solution that could work on this AM station. I'm thinking similar to WBBR 1130 in New York. Is that something that could work?
If KFNN 1510 in Phoenix shows anything, it's that it would be very challenging to make this format work. KFNN ran the "Money Radio" format for 28 years and, even then, they still fell.

I wonder about that. Most High School stations are tiny FMs that might get out around 5 miles or so. If a kid, under the guidance of school personnel, was made to understand their program will be bouncing all over the Carolinas by day and all over the eastern seaboard at night, that might change the equation. (I know I would've been pumped). I can also say that about 10 years ago my Niece, knowing that I was interested in radio, asked me how her school theater group might be able to do something on radio. Not knowing what might have been available in the DC area, all I could suggest was WAMU, but that was obviously a non-starter.
The idea of kids on 1110 could have a lot of benefits. 1. It provides a fill-in format, far better than aimless instrumentals. 2. Kids will definitely know what radio is, and how it is different from the internet. 3. Done correctly and in concert with the schools, Radio One gets good press as a responsible part of the media landscape. If they have a property that they don't know what to do with, and it is not otherwise generating money, they have nothing to lose in developing interest among the next generations. At least they could try. Other radio operators might try the same thing. I have no idea why John Catsimitadis bought 1700 WRCR, but until he figures out what he wants to do with that property, a school lab that gets kids interested radio could be an investment in radio's future and a needed audience by engaging them in a whole new way.
