Someone solve this

Nirvana were trendsetters for the new grunge movement in 1991. Albeit, grunge wasn't NEW but it broke out in that year. It's no different than hair metal, hip hop, disco, etc. Just because they're not YOUR cup of tea doesn't mean they didn't change the music landscape. Alternative rock taking over was the changing of the guard from hair metal.

Hmmm...

An artist has to be a bit better than 'mediocre' to be on a list of talent like this, in my mind.

But, hey, apply for that next MD job that comes available, and let us know how things turn out. ;)
The grammys , youre really going off of that
most music nowadays good to you?

heres a rap song: Kendrick Lamar - Peekaboo
what they talkin bout nuthin?
Go google the lyrics.....
Think this baby deserves a grammy?
yeah, its funny and catchy but the mentality of it is about 3rd grade....no

Some things just dont deserve a grammy , will they get one? probably....

Short answer: they test well and build audience.
tested by whom? listeners, real listeners?
id like to see proof.

God i just cant wait to hear hotel california again( Every classic hits or rock station plays this 9 times in a few hours.
Wcbs fm in nyc and waxq 104.3 love this song....

Things get boring....perhaps they should bring different listener groups in every few years for radio , and pick some new material....yawn.

The Elton John, Nirvana and Eagles styled tunes are being played because, they're still popular and test very well. Most of the 90s Alt Rock is getting played again, thanks to the Mainstream/Classic Rock stations, for that same reason.

P.S. If these musicians weren't popular, they would've faded into obscurity some time ago.

Commercial radio is built for the person who occasionally tunes in and not for the person who listens all the time--there are a lot more of the former than the latter. And what do those occasional listeners want to hear? Of course, songs they and their friends like. Since radio stations cannot provide personal playlists for each listener, they must go for the most common denominator, the songs that will get the occasional listeners to tune in. You know these songs because you hear them a lot:

"Hotel California," by the Eagles
"Smells Like Teen Spirit," by Nirvana
"Billie Jean," by Michael Jackson

and a few more.

As to formats, well they're soluable. I remember being surprised when I heard Aerosmith's "Dream On," being played on an AC station; I mean that was a standard rock song in its day.

So your solutions are basically to create your own playlists either online (as @The BigA suggests) or with your own CD collection and a stereo cassette recorder (which is what I do). Good luck!

You label yourself a 'critic' with your handle here, yet fully don't accept the fact that the Grammy is "regarded by many as the most prestigious and significant awards in the music industry worldwide"? Well, okay, then.

Most music today? Dude, I'm well out of the demographic (seems like you might be, too) for nearly all modern music, but I'm NOT going to be that stodgy old cuss that b!tches about things I don't control. But, yeah, I *can* find modern music in genres you've probably ignored for your entire adult life to enjoy from time to time.

Look, don't be so obstinate to ignore the few professionals that participate on the forum that tell you about ways to enjoy the music YOU want to enjoy.

It ain't rocket science, really.

Funny how these such people as nycradiocritic think everything in radio is a scam because it's not to their peronal choice. They're not worthy of a response because they will argue it is not true. Instead they want to spread a little hate for those of us in the business because we don't deem them the center of the universe. They have no clue about radio. They seem to not even grasp the concept of a job where we are given a directive and reaching the company's goals keeps us employed. An owner I once worked for summed up the sterotype as one forced to tear down others so they would look good.

Look, I think our OP started out venting against one particular station about the choice to play one (very successful) artist that they don't particularly care for.

Gently informing our new user that a group like Nirvana is still regarded as successful - and that plenty of listeners still enjoy hearing them on the radio...well, didn't care for that at all.

Maybe the OP needs to be introduced to some of our other listeners of non-standard radio fare.

Chimp?

id like to see proof.

I personally know of 17 Classic Hits stations in the top 40 markets that still do music research on their libraries. Most of them are owned by Audacy or iHeart. And such music testing is always based on having the listeners on the panel.

As for "proof" ... sorry, dude, that's proprietary information.
