Sports to replace KNX News simulcast at 97.1 FM

Hmm... on a similar topic, in a market far away:

Now if only WBT in Charlotte NC can follow suit & go back to AM only on 1110 AM, that'd be great. Swap Mix WLNK, and put the Sports FNZ on there instead.

in a Different Market, but Similar Format Wheel Drama.

Holy cow. Also… finally. For a city as fanatical as LA (with two of every major team because they’re just so special), this has been a long time coming and sorely needed. My main fear is Audacy using a lot of garbage BetMGM gambling content to pad the schedule, but I’d imagine they’d have to have local hosts in at least two major dayparts to compete. I’m also curious to simply see what an FM sports option for listeners does to 570 and 710. While I’m sad to see KNX lose an FM signal, I’ll likely be tuning into The Fan way more often (unless they’re talking point spreads and parlays). Exciting times!

How much will this station draw on the staff of nearby KWFN San Diego?

Similar branding, similar dial location?
The reason the San Diego Fan does well, is because they are all about "The Padres". It would be suicide for them to change that to an LA focused sports station. I'm sure the two will remain separate.

I'm not talking about a simulcast. I'm talking about some hosts doing unique shows at two stations. Or perhaps some transferring to LA.

Or perhaps someone like Jonas Knox leaving Fox Sports LA for this new station.

We’ll likely know more (possibly the full lineup) come next Wednesday, that’s when their new Instagram page is promoting a lineup reveal

On air...still identifying as KNX News 97.1. They haven't started telling the listeners yet.

Take that back, just heard the announcement.
I heard them talking about it earlier this hour right after the top of the hour national newscast.

A lot of the explanation was about the tough media market and Audacy looking for more ad dollars.

If anything they’re being very transparent with listeners, especially with them mentioning this is a financial decision- they basically have been talking about it on-air since we’ve seen it circulating online. Given that KNX isn’t fully going away and that it’s a legacy, trustworthy brand. I figure their honesty is trying to earn goodwill with the hope listeners continue tuning in via other means

The press release makes a big deal about the LA Olympics. But the NBC Radio rights are held by iHeart and KLAC:

FIFA World Cup rights are with Fox Sports, and by extension, iHeart & KLAC.

It may be possible for KNX to obtain local credentials. But they won't have access to the live play by play.
