Oldest Extant Off-Air VHS/Beta Tape You Have

Insomniac youth? Were you a big fan of the World News Now Polka? ;)
Another solid scan of tapes lately. Tape 488 is the '80s in a nutshell. The #1 sitcom, and the Keatons on Family Ties. Appointment viewing for millions of Americans.
Tape 493 with CVN?! Cable Value Network was one of the early shopping channels, and one that my mother remembers watching in the late '80s. I ought to get my 4+ hours of late '90s HSN converted and uploaded. The late Billy Mays is on that tape doing a pitch with the hosts.
Tape 495, also gold. Weather Channel before everyone could just "google it". Weatherstar XL or 4000, if I may ask?
I have found that Peter Pan (Mary Martin) at least four times on tape.

BTW...did you get my personal message on the 1988 KIMA tape? It's still sitting here, ready to be sent to you.

Even though the start of that top-rated sitcom continues to erode his reputation both financially and intellectually, its still great to see all those NBC Thursday night blocks/partial blocks as a fading reminder how a limited supply of options still provided more people to talk about each episode the following day at work or school. Tape 479 is another great "'80s in a nutshell" find with that same top-rated sitcom along with that adventure show starring David Hasselhoff that remains a touchstone of the decade, along with that hair restoration infomercial to showcase the crazy hairdos, and this was when infomercials were fairly new (they look off in the late '80s/early '90s). It was also great to see that short-lived Motown Revue, as it took inspiration from the original 1960s tours by including a nice mix of classic acts with some new wave acts to draw a wider audience. Its a little ironic that of the groups you've listed, none of them were actually on the Motown and associated labels. Other acts in that series on the other two episodes featured included Vanity, Weird Al Yankovic, Kim Carnes, and in one of his last appearances before his tragic plane crash, Rick Nelson.

This brings me to my latest VHS lot. Based on what was recorded in the first tape, you'd never know he/she was selling these from just across the Hudson River from the Big Apple. Lots of national and some NYC newscasts were found mostly from 1994 and 1997, and although a good number of commercials were present, some of the broadcasts were chopped up into bits and pieces, providing lots of partial finds. In particular, the newsbreaks at the bottom/top of the hour were partially or fully skipped, but this still a nice bit of somewhat harder to find newscasts in addition to the usual national evening broadcasts.

TAPE 1: Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory: "The Making of a Subculture" taped off WNET/PBS on 5/18/1993 with some promos after the documentary, followed by part of Two Mules for Sister Sara (1970) recorded off WWOR on 5/9/1993 with commercials, with about two-thirds of the tape blank. TDK T-120, EP mode

TAPE 2: Episodes of Woodcarving with Rick Bute (1988 episode) and Newton's Apple (1992) recorded off WLIW/PBS in July 1993 with promos between the shows, followed by the last 30 minutes of an unknown movie, followed by the last hour of another movie taped off probably a pay-TV channel with no commercials/promos. RCA T-120, EP mode

TAPE 3: About half of WCBS 2 This Morning (mostly from the CBS This Morning portions) on 4/14/1997 with some commercials as well as most of Days of our Lives taped off WNBC on 4/15/1997 with most commercials (the video quality in terms of snow suggested that the viewer probably lived much further from the city than the seller's location provided or just had a bad antenna, or maybe even Gemini was an off-brand compared to other brands), followed by the CBS Morning News, part of CBS This Morning, the CBS Evening News, and much of CBS Up To The Minute taped off WCBS on 4/15-4/16/1997 with commercials. Unfortunately, antenna problems resulted in the signal being mostly black & white (feels strange seeing those early website plugs on commercials in monochrome, that's "fauxstalgia" for you). Gemini R11 T-120, EP mode

TAPE 4: Most of the last half of Good Morning America (partially on location in Alaska) , about 30 minutes from the WABC 5 and 6 PM News, ABC World News Tonight, ABC News Primetime Live, the WNBC 11 PM News, and most of ABC News Nightline taped off WABC on 5/19/1994 with most commercials, followed by most of ABC World News This Morning and part of the first hour of Good Morning America recorded off WABC on 5/20/1994 with commercials. JVC T-120, EP mode

TAPE 5: Most of NBC News Today, the NBC Nightly News, the CBS Reports special Inside Jury, the first five minutes of the WCBS 11 PM News, much of CBS Up To The Minute, about five minutes of ABC World News Now recorded off WNBC/WCBS/WABC on 4/16-17/1997 with most commercials, followed by about 15 minutes of Good Morning America taped off WABC on 4/17/1997 with a few commercials. Fuji AV Pro T-120, EP mode

TAPE 6: Part of the last hour of CBS This Morning, several short clips from a summer rerun The Price Is Right (the end of Swap Meet, Switcheroo, the second Showcase Showdown, and the closing segment; this show's OAD was 10/14/1993), part of the WCBS Noon News (partially broken in by the national CBS News on the developing O.J. Simpson case), a couple short clips from The Young and the Restless along with another CBS News special report on O.J. Simpson, the last few minutes of the WCBS 6 PM News, the CBS Evening News, part of Hard Copy, America Tonight (short-lived CBS newsmagazine that would be through before the summer was), 48 Hours, portions of the WCBS and WABC 11 PM News, and ABC News Nightline taped off WCBS and WABC on 6/22/1994 with many commercials present. JVC T-120, EP mode

TAPE 7: The last half hour of NBC Nightside, NBC News At Sunrise, most of NBC News Today, last five minutes of the WNBC 6 PM News, NBC Nightly News, and part of Extra recorded off WNBC on 4/17/1997 with most commercials, followed by nearly an hour of NBC Nightside taped off WNBC on 4/18/1997 with commercials, followed by most of the first hour of Good Morning America taped off WABC on 4/18/1997 with most commercials. Gemini R11 T-120, EP mode

TAPE 8: Kicks off with about the last 20 minutes of Days of our Lives taped off WNBC on 6/28/1994 with commercials, followed by a couple short clips from the WNBC 5 & 6 PM News and the NBC Nightly News taped later the same day with commercials (unfortunately, the video goes bad a few minutes into the Nightly News), followed by part of Good Morning America, ABC World News Tonight, most of Turning Point, most of the WABC 11 PM News, and ABC News Nightline taped off WABC on 6/29/1994 with commercials, followed by part of the second hour of NBC News Today (one of the first episodes after the move to Studio 1A) taped off WNBC on 7/1/1994 with a few commercials. Gemini T-120, EP mode

TAPE 9: Begins with ABC News Nightline taped off WABC on 2/26/1997 with commercials, followed much of ABC World News Now, most of ABC World News This Morning, a little over half of Good Morning America, World News Tonight, part of Nightline, about ten minutes of Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher, and about an hour of ABC World News Now from the next overnight taped off WABC on 2/27-2/28/1997 with most commercials. Gemini R11 T-120, EP mode

TAPE 10: Most of ABC News Turning Point taped off WABC on 10/12/1994 with commercials, followed by most of the WNBC 11 PM News taped from the same night, followed by much of NBC Nightside, NBC News At Sunrise, most of NBC News Today, part of the WNBC 6 PM News and the NBC Nightly News taped off WNBC on 10/13/1994 with commercials, followed by much of the MacNeil/Lehrer Newshour taped off WNET on 10/13/1994 with no promos. Memorex T-120, EP mode

Happy 20th anniversary to this long-running thread to showcase all of our finds that began with a simple presence of our own personal collections (for me, it was coverage in the wake of the Challenger disaster as recorded by my parents if you don't know by now).

Very slow to start the spring season. Found one tape today at a sale that had items from five or six storage units. It had "Scream" on the label...and yes, it was the 1996 horror classic with Neve Campbell, David Arquette, and Courteney Cox. Off premium cable or PPV, no promos.

I am leaving for Boise, Idaho this weekend and will be stopping at several estate sales, yard sales, and the Goodwill Outlet (Pasco, WA) along the way...won't be back to Yakima until Monday afternoon or evening. Fingers crossed for some VHS recordings.

Good news, but kinda bad news to begin with - I got in touch with a contact of mine who also buys storage units (and often has 'dollar sales' here in Yakima with thousands of items for $1 each). He runs an eBay resale store and makes over $15,000 a month from reselling. I have gotten oodles of VHS tapes from his previous sales (including 1994 and 2003 broadcasts of the Ellensburg Rodeo, and tons of Tri-Cities TV goodness including '90s KEPR newscasts), but lately with the sheer load of units he's been purchasing, the recorded tapes have been getting tossed. He often buys units around here, but sometimes goes as far as Salem and Spokane.
I found him at the sale today. He will keep an eye out for recorded VHS/Beta in future units and hold them aside for me this summer. This is a good sign. Summer 2026 should be rockin' with new finds. I have a lot of 35+ tapes going up to "M-----i" when I get back from Boise.

I've been thinking about getting into the storage unit business to begin with. I've watched too many J&J, Jebus and 2nd Cents videos on YouTube. I know storage units can be a huge gamble...that $600 unit could have fifty empty boxes and a bunch of paperwork...that $40 unit full of 'clothes' could have a hidden tote with 50 PS3/PS4 games in it plus a console...my friend even found a $12,000 valued motorcycle in a unit full of junk and clothing.

Well, my second venture out to the Goodwill Outlet in Canton proved to be another success, maybe even more so than last time in terms of the amount of tapes I ended up coming away with. Many were unlabeled. Ended up finding a lot of local content plus out-of-market recordings from the West Palm Beach, Florida market.

Magnavox T-120.

Still have a few more to go through, but at first glance, they appear to be rental dubs, but I'll still check for any extras afterward. Also bought a few unlabeled tapes that turned out to be blank even though they were no longer sealed.

Some notes and observations:
1) With a few exceptions, it's obvious that most of these tapes were recorded by the same person or family.
2) The one S-VHS tape didn't exactly have higher-quality recordings as I expected. They were about the same quality as the rest of these tapes.
3) A lot of the mid-'90s morning news recordings included features pertaining to the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund with some local guests with connections to the cause.
4) The Bravo presentation of Closer was shown uncensored with a disclaimer despite having a TV-14 rating and containing quite a bit of nudity.

I first heard about these storage unit auctions about a decade ago at a video game convention, and of course don't forget the show that started it all, Storage Wars. There was a recent NYT article about a NJ teenager who decided to flip these for a living, and he sells his stuff on eBay courtesy of the Mike's Unique Treasures store. I've definitely shied away from a gamer outside of a few casual games, mostly in a retro way, although if I had more free time, I'd probably resume and that's how I'll probably spend a chunk of my retirement hopefully. I may consider trying one on Lockerfox or some other online site someday just to see how it works, but I'm still content with eBay/M*****i/estate sales/thrift stores/Craigslist at this point. There are literally hundreds of thousands of storage lockers out there, so who knows what people will find, and back in 2017, my first ever Craigslist deal was a bunch of VHS and Beta tapes from a storage unit, with the oldest find being a Washington Redskins-Dallas Cowboys game from 1983 on a VHS tape, complete with commercials and halftime. The storage unit had all sorts of other stuff inside, but I have vague memories of what else was there.

The next lot that I searched was another eBay lot: 42 VHS tapes from a seller from Ogdensburg, NY, just across the St. Lawrence River from Canada. Despite that proximity, no Canadian content was found, which was a little bit surprising since last year, a lot of Beta tapes in similar proximity yielded numerous taped recorded off CKWS (mostly Star Trek airings from 1982). Results were more miss than hit, with five tapes ending up being just commercial releases disguised in a blank sleeve, and this included a couple of TMNT releases, including their Live Coming Out Of Their Shells Tour, of which I've already got a copy with the sleeve. About half were pay TV/zapped commercial duds, and this included a few videos involving deer hunting and fur trapping, as well as a wedding reception and a tape with a Lisbon Central School video yearbook featuring the graduates of the Class of 2001, which confirms that the seller lived nearby for much of their lives, and given the find of the one tape that triggered me to purchased the lot, made sense given that (s)he would have been a preschooler at the time it aired. About ten tapes contained 2000s content that I'll mostly pass on: movies recorded off Hallmark, USA, TCM, and A&E, including the 2001 version of The Great Gatsby that I may still end up recording. One tape also had several episodes from a TV Land marathon of The A-Team from September 2000, but I prefer original broadcasts with 1980s shows unless if it was rare. Those will end up in the sell pile. Still, there were seven keepers.

TAPE 1: The 70th Academy Awards taped off WWNY/ABC (as a small market, their primary station was CBS, but also aired select ABC and NBC programming) on 3/23/1998 with commercials (I've already got this off WPVI), followed by the first several minutes of an episode of Miami Vice taped off WTSM/ABC on 2/13/1987 with a few commercials, followed by most of The Equalizer taped off WWNY/CBS on 2/11/1987 with commercials. Unknown brand T-120, EP mode

TAPE 2: Roy Rogers: King of the Cowboys (1992 documentary special created exclusively for AMC from Republic Pictures), Bells of Rosarita (1945), Roll on Texas Moon (1946), followed by an overnight reairing of the first two features recorded off AMC on 12/3-12/4/1992 with promos and featurettes between all presentations except for the first two. Focal T-120, EP mode

TAPE 3: Part one of the Hemingway made-for-syndication miniseries taped off WPIX on 4/25/1988 with few commercials, followed by part two of Hemingway taped off WPIX on 5/4/1988 with most commercials, then it cuts back for the last 20 minutes of the overnight rebroadcast of USA Tonight (special New York broadcast featuring a story on a crime in then-seedy Harlem) along with most of a Secrets of Success Infomercial taped off WPIX on 5/5/1988 with commercials. Maxell EX T-120, EP mode (WPIX was seen all over the northeast if you had cable even if you rarely went to the Big Apple)

TAPE 4: Marked "Christmas Show's 87" on the label, this definitely proved itself nice for the most part. Begins with The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus taped off WWNY/CBS on 12/3/1987 with commercials (I've already got the original 1985 broadcast), followed by most of Frosty, The Snowman and 'Twas The Night Before Christmas taped off WWNY/CBS on 12/9/1987 with few commercials (I've got broadcasts from other years, but not '87), followed by most of 'Tis The Season To Be Smurf, Mouse, Mystery, and Me, and most of Family Ties (a special one-hour episode) taped off WSTM/NBC on 12/13/1987 with commercials. Memorex T-120, EP mode

TAPE 5: Dying Young (1991), The Naked Gun 2 1/2: The Smell of Fear (1991), When It Was A Game II (original HBO documentary), and Virgin High (1990) recorded off HBO on 7/28-29/1992 with promos after each movie. Focal T-120, EP mode

TAPE 6: A trio of Charlie Chan movies: The Feathered Serpent (1948), Mr. Moto In Danger Island (1939), and A Mr. Moto Takes A Chance (1938) recorded off WPIX in September 1988 with commercials. Maxell T-120, EP mode

TAPE 7: Episodes two through five of the Teddy Ruxpin cartoon, recorded off WPIX daily from 3/10-3/13/1987 with commercials. Like the TMNT cartoon later that year, thist began as a special five-show miniseries, this later got picked up into a 65-episode syndicated run which aired later that year. Great find with lots of nice toy/food commercials! Memorex T-120, SP mode

Well, my second venture out to the Goodwill Outlet in Canton proved to be another success, maybe even more so than last time in terms of the amount of tapes I ended up coming away with. Why on earth would someone want to move from Florida to Ohio?

I just checked my nearest Goodwill Outlet store (just outside of Baltimore) after dumping some 1980s-90s National Geographic issues due to their low value as well as having a DVD-ROM set to access the content. Unfortunately, it was a total dud with no VHS tapes in the bins, even retail VHS. A nearby Savers thrift store (about the size of an old Kmart) had about 50 retail VHS's, but no blanks. That left me with hunting another eBay lot from Lexington, Virginia. Most of the labels were missing as a way to perhaps get around the AI bots on eBay. Overall, more misses than hits with all of the 1980s tape stock (about half of the 20 tapes) having nothing but rental duds or pay-TV movies with almost no promos, although there was one tape that contained the last few minutes of The Outlaws as well as the CBS movie presentation of Swing Shift from 3/21/1987 with a couple of commercials off small-market WDBJ. Another featured about 30 minutes of the 1990 Billboard Music Awards off WVFT/FOX with two local spots that I may farm and post individually, but I've already got that broadcast. Another tape contained a 15-minute behind the scenes feature of My Best Friend's Wedding after that movie. The oldest find was about three minutes of HBO promos from around August 1985. Most of the duds/near misses were movies recorded in LP mode, with a few in SP, but none in EP. Here were the four keepers:

TAPE 1: Donnie Brasco (1998) recorded off Showtime circa April 1998 with no promos, followed by a 60 Minutes clip on Billy Joel from 4/26/1998, followed by most of The Unreal Story of Professional Wrestling taped off A&E on 4/26/1998 with commercials. Polaroid T-160, LP mode

TAPE 2: True Lies (1994) recorded off HBO on 8/8/1995 with a few promos, followed by most of Encounters: The Hidden Truth taped off WFXR/FXO on 8/14/1995 with a few commercials, then it cuts back to HBO from 8/8/1995 with the last 20 minutes of the High On Crack Street: Lost Lives In Lowell documentary and the HBO First Look show on The Net with promos before and after the shows. A nice time capsule of how the emerging World Wide Web for the later, with the premise of the film being more true than ever. Polaroid T-120, LP mode

TAPE 3: In The Line Of Fire (1993) taped off Showtime circa July 1994 with no promos, followed by most of Mario Lanza: The American Caruso (1983 documentary) and the first few minutes of Charlie Rose taped off WVPT in July 1994 with a few promos, followed by the about the last ten minutes of A&E Stage: Billie Holiday and the first half hour of the GM Playrights Theater presentation of I Remember You taped off A&E circa summer 1994 with commercials. Kodak T-120, LP mode

TAPE 4: E! Mysteries & Scandals and a rerun of E! True Hollywood Story on Natalie Wood taped off E! on 1/4/1999 with commercials, followed by another episode of E! Mysteries & Scandals (on Marilyn Monroe) taped off E! on 1/19/1999 with commercials, followed by VH1 Storytellers: Billy Joel II (rerun from a marathon) taped off VH1 on 1/27/1999 with commercials, followed by the VH1 Behind The Music episode of The Day The Music Died from 2/3/1999 with commercials (40 years to the day of Rock 'n Roll's first major tragedy), followed by The Howard Stern Show (guest: Ringo Starr) and the first ten minutes of Sexy Swimsuits '97 taped off E! on 2/8/1999 with commercials. The tape included some local inserts from the Bronx/Westchester County, NY area as well despite the seller being located below the Mason-Dixon. Maxell T-120, EP mode

I'm not sure if I will get through it all, but I've got a 54-tape VHS lot from Angola, Indiana (near the tri-state border between Indiana, Ohio, and Michigan) coming next, but I'm also heading out west for a two-week trip next Monday, starting and ending in Salt Lake City and including portions of eastern Idaho, southern Montana, and northwestern Wyoming. We'll be busy like most trips and the weather is looking unusually cold, but any significant find would be shipped off. Hopefully that next lot will be better as one of the labels said "Kim's tape only Cosby's + Moonlighting", with others mentioning "700 Club", "Johnny Carson", and "GH" (for possibly General Hospital) on them.

A first!

Just won a lot of recorded VHS tapes (and some CDs) plus their wood-grain storage cases...from a Hibid estate auction in western Kansas! Phillipsburg, to be exact. I paid a two-dollar bill for the lot...plus there will be shipping charges and handling, so it will be more like $20-30, I'm sure.
Why did I purchase this lot? With eBay doing away with VHS lots via the AI crackdown, the estate auction houses are still selling off tapes in some locations. Some auction houses only allow local pickup, while others have shipping options available through third parties. The tapes look REALLY nice. TaleSpin, Saved by the Bell, Long Ago & Far Away (PBS/WGBH children's show with the late James Earl Jones), several Hallmark and other TV-movies, Shogun, etc. Suspecting these were recorded off the western Kansas semi-satellite stations (like KBSH/KAYS-7, KSNC-2, etc.), and probably KSAS for TaleSpin, and KOOD-9 Hays for the Long Ago & Far Away unless it was off a retail VHS. Any local content from KSNC, KBSH/KAYS, KUPK/KLBY, etc., is probably just as rare as the KXGN stuff I recently found, especially since they had local inserts into Wichita news. Now here's hoping she didn't zap out the ads.

I just checked the Angola lot. Given that I'll be busy packing for my flight Monday, I'll just provide a summary rather than a detailed breakdown, given it was 54 tapes. Overall, I kept about half of those, with. Finds included the 17th season premiere of Saturday Night Live with Michael Jordan as host off WNDU on 9/28/1991 with commercials, the TNT original movies starring a pair of Old Testament figures from the mid-90s (Jacob and Joseph) with some local inserts from the South Bend-Elkhart, Indiana area, most of an episode of ESPN's Sportslook from December 1990 as well as a portion of the 1990 Heisman Trophy presentation with a few commercials (most of the tape had the Penn State-Notre Dame and Notre Dame-USC games from November 1990, but most of the commercials were zapped), LOTS of footage off The 700 Club from the 1990s with spotty commercials, as well as some AMC promos from the early '90s.

Other finds included the ABC Sunday Night Movie Echo off WBND on 1/5/1997 with commercials, the Stand In The Gap Promises Keepers rally off C-SPAN on 10/4/1997, much of a Larry King Live episode off CNN from 1997, coverage from Karla Faye Tucker's execution off CNN on 2/3/1998, an episode of Antiques Roadshow along with the American Experience five-hour documentary of Reagan off WNIT in 1998 with some promos, the 1996 movie Susie Q off The Disney Channel on 3/31/2000 with a couple of promo breaks, most of Oprah Winfrey featuring Paul McCartney on 11/22/1997 with commercials, the CBS movie Borrowed Hearts: A Holiday Romance off WSBT on 11/30/1997 with commercials, along with some music videos off the Faith Values Channel from 1995-96 (sort of a Christian version of MTV), three tapes featuring Ken Burns Baseball documentary from August-September 1994 including much of the preview special, with a couple pledge breaks off WNIT, along with several infomercials from the '90s including some from Gunthy-Recker, America's Country Line Dancin' with Diane Horner (from the then-new Mall of America), and the Quick Study and Body By Jake from 1994.

Apparently, that tape with the Cosby/Moonlighting/etc. happened to also say "The Facts Of Life", but that Paul McCartney episode as well as the figure skating exhibition and most of the closing ceremony from the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics taped over it. There was even a tape where the video was out for part of a Price Is Right episode from late 1996 and the two "GH" tapes happened to have General Hospital shows from the mid-90s, but included skipped/zapped ads on most of those tapes, although one tape contained about the last 15 minutes of All My Children and the first 15 minutes of a One Life To Live episode from April 1994.

Well, it's off to northern Utah, southeastern Idaho, western Wyoming, and southwestern Montana for the next two weeks and I'll probably slow down a bit unless if something good comes up on the market.

IndianaMichigan TV archives on YouTube had stuff from Michians along with a couple of things from TNT. The AVTB archives has the stuff posted now.

Several tapes were found on April 17th-18th. One from the Yakima Genealogy Yard Sale, one from Zillah (an estate sale as part of the City Wide Yard Sale event...with dozens of those "clothes/baby clothes/well-used toys"-type sales as well), and a few from an estate/garage sale off Ahtanum Road in Yakima.

Tape 2 (Zillah) - Most of Rush Limbaugh taped off KGW-8 Portland on 7/2/1993 with commercials; then an hour and a half of Victory at Sea taped off KOPB/PBS in July 1993, no promos or pledge breaks found. Scotch T-120

Enjoy your trip, Michael. Make sure to stop at estate sales or yard sales along the way. Check for listings on Craigslist for MJ's Vintage and Family & Friends LLC estate sales. They are the two big operators in eastern Idaho (Idaho Falls, Pocatello, Blackfoot, Rexburg).

Speaking of Montana, I have a job interview for a teaching position in Red Lodge. Tomorrow morning at 7AM PT (8 MT).

Full write-up later.
Got my Kansas auction lot today. UNFORTUNATELY... the CD and VHS holders were all damaged during shipment. The CD holders look damaged beyond repair. Very little packaging at all - just a bunch of brown paper and bits of cardboard. Sent out a claim and hope to get my shipping fees back. They were quite expensive...well over $50. I'm not so impressed.
VHS tapes look fine, however, thank goodness. Just popped in the first tape and found "Harvest of Fire", with Lolita Davidovich and Patty Duke. This is one of those Hallmark Hall of Fame films, and CBS aired it on April 21st, 1996. As I was expecting...it's off KBSH Hays KS with commercials and a severe weather update from KWCH. Anything from the western Kansas semi-satellites is mega-rare, almost as rare as the Glendive stuff!!

Update on the Kansas lot. The taper left commercials on a lot of the recordings, and there are some good ones so far. I've only checked a handful.

Tape 1 - Long Ago and Far Away episode (The Reluctant Dragon) and WonderWorks: Young Charlie Chaplin taped off KOOD/PBS (ch 9 Bunker Hill/Hays) on 8/25/1990 with a couple of minutes of promos in between; partial 2-part pilot episode of The Bradys and full episode of Dallas taped off KGIN/CBS (ch 11 Grand Island) on 2/9/1990 with commercials. TDK T-160, over 4 hours left blank

Laser T-120
Tape 3 - Repeat of "Sarah, Plain and Tall" (1991) taped off KGIN/CBS on 12/19/1992 with commercials (Grand Island is much closer to Phillipsburg than Lincoln); "Skylark" (1993) taped off KGIN/CBS on 2/7/1993 with commercials; last 15 minutes of "Scrooge" (1970), and part of a GLH Formula No. 9 infomercial taped off KGIN-11 in December 1992 with commercials; partial episode of Knots Landing taped off KGIN/CBS on 11/5/1992 with commercials; last half of Another World taped off KSNK/NBC (ch 8 McCook NE) on 11/13/1992 with commercials; followed by two more partial episodes of Another World taped off KSNK/NBC in August 1992 with commercials. Prior to the KBS branding...rare!); Bugs Bunny's Looney Christmas Tales and Santa Bear's High-Flying Adventure taped off KAYS/CBS on Christmas Eve 1987 with commercials. Kodak XHG T-120
Tape 6 - 'Spencer's Mountain' (1963) and part of a Total Gym infomercial taped off The Family Channel on 1/3/1998 with commercials. Sony T-120

Finishing another tape right now and found a good chunk of Nickelodeon's Roundhouse at the end! Roundhouse was their version of Saturday Night Live or In Living Color, and very underrated. There are multiple tapes with Saved By the Bell and one tape marked Talespin. That's why I bought the lot. More later...

More tapes have been processed from the auction lot in Kansas. *I did get my insurance claim approved, and a refund of the shipping costs will be processed into my account in the next 10 business days.*

Sony T-120
Tape 8 - 'The Out-of-Towners' (1970) taped off unknown channel minus commercials (assumed TBS); 'It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World' (1963), All in the Family, and about 2/3rds of Hogan's Heroes taped off TBS early morning 8/21/1991 with commercials. Unknown branded T-120, looks like an SKC
Tape 9 -'Three Men and a Baby' (1987) taped off KSNK/NBC on 11/4/1990 with commercials; episode of Life Goes On taped off KHGI/ABC (NTV) on Veterans Day 1990 with commercials, followed by a channel flip to KGIN/CBS for Murder, She Wrote and the first 25 minutes of "Fatal Attraction" (1987) with commercials. The Life Goes On episode is a first for me. Much of the country was watching (or even taping) 60 Minutes at 7/6c on Sunday nights. It's quite fuzzy, however, as the transmitter for KHGI was over 70 miles away from Phillipsburg.\
A handful of tapes are left to check.

I'm back from my trip, and although I didn't find any blank tapes at the few second stores I visited, I was still being watchful to anything good online like I described in my last post, and possibly taking a page from crainbebo, purchased a lot of ten VHS tapes from an eBay seller in Hays, KS, with some labels mentioning "Star Search", "Are You Afraid Of The Dark", and the "1998 MTV Awards". If you enjoyed crainbebo's posts above, you'll also like mine. Retrocirq would also be proud. All finds contain commercials and are recorded in EP mode unless otherwise described.

TAPE 5: Biography (Frank Zappa) taped off A&E circa late 1994 with no commercials, followed by SeaQuest DSV taped off KSNW/NBC on 1/8/1998 with commercials, followed by the closing credits of Ren and Stimpy and Are You Afraid of the Dark (rerun of a season 3 episode) taped off Nickelodeon in April/May 1995 with commercials (also from SNICK like Roundhouse), followed by Time Runner (1992) taped off Sci-Fi on 5/21/1995 with commercials (including an interstitial with "AI"- how creepy), followed by the season finale of SeaQuest DSV taped off KSNW/NBC on 5/21/1995 with commercials. Sony V T-120

TAPE 6: A rerun of the 1997 Rock & Roll Gymnastics Championship and the 1998 National High School Division 2 Cheerleading Championship taped off ESPN2 on 7/19/1998, followed by nearly the complete 15th Annual MTV Video Music Awards (begins right at the start of the "When You Believe" duet with Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey) and about a half hour's worth of music videos following the special also off MTV, including an early promo for TRL. SKC T-120

TAPE 7: Six summer reruns from the 1992-93 season of Star Search, including five regular episodes and an encore presentation of the Round 1 semifinals taped off WGN on 7/4, 7/18, 7/25, 8/1, 8/8, and 8/15/1993. Yes, the season where the theme finally got lyrics and one of the episodes featured Usher as a contestant. Sony T-120

TAPE 8: A summer rerun of the Round 2 semifinals of Star Search '91 taped off KBSH on 8/11/1991, followed by the last half of an International Star Search episode taped off KBSH in December 1989, then it cuts to a special "classic" presentation of the Star Search '90 finals off KBSH on 9/5/1992, then it moves on for about the first half of Star Search's tenth season premiere off KBSH on 9/12/1992 (the first episode produced in Disney's MGM Studios), followed by about half of the KBS 10 PM News (semi-satellite KBSH didn't have a news department), Inside Edition Weekend, George Michael's Sports Machine, and the first several minutes of Star Search on 10/18/1992, followed by about three-fourths of Star Search taped off KSBH on 11/1/1992, followed by another episode with around three-quarters of Star Search taped off KSBH on 11/8/1992. I've already got the original broadcasts of the SS '91 Round 2 semifinals and the 1990 finals from that 2019 Malvern, PA Craigslist lot (taped off KDKA). Sony T-120

TAPE 9: Begins with around 20 minutes of excerpts off Star Search circa fall 1989 from the dance competition segments with no commercials, followed by the last dozen minutes or so of Late Night with David Letterman and around three-quarters of Friday Night Videos (best dance hits of the decade episode) taped off KSNC/NBC on 11/10/1989 with commercials, followed by four reruns of Star Search '91 from Round 1 taped off KBSH on 1/26, 2/2, 2/9, and 2/16/1991 with commercials, LP mode for the fall 1989 Star Search excepts, SP mode for the 2/16/91 rerun (the Round 1 semifinals which originally aired around Thanksgiving 1990), and EP for the rest. Once again, I've already got copies of those Round 1 broadcasts courtesy of that Craigslist phone call from February 2019, but anything from Friday Night Videos, especially off of a tiny market that most people only see from an airplane, is quite rare.

The tenth tape contained most of a VHS dub of the 2003 DVD From Jazz: For The Beginner To Advanced Live at Broadway Dance Center, but I'll probably pass on that one given the inferior quality to the official release.

More tapes have been processed from the auction lot in Kansas. *I did get my insurance claim approved, and a refund of the shipping costs will be processed into my account in the next 10 business days.*

Was DOOL still using the old opening or did they switch to the current CGI opening with the rotating hourglass?
