"Newsroom culture clash" at CBS News

And it goes without saying that - should a Democrat win the election in 2028 and decide that the likes of "The Five" and Greg Gutfeld(!) on Fox News needed to be sued into non-existence/shut down

The fact is that Fox News was sued by Dominion for lying about their election machines, but no one in the Biden administration, including the FCC, ever discussed using the force of the government to in some way challenge them for "news distortion." That was the claim the president and the FCC made about 60 Minutes. So I really doubt any other president or FCC would ever use the government in the way it's being used now.

Variety runs a piece that questions whether there’s enough of a staff left at 60 Minutes to start the new season this fall.

I bet that's true. Just like with Colbert, there's not enough money to staff the show the way it was done 20 years ago. That would have been the case regardless of who's in charge. But the reason you hire a new producer is so he can come up with ways to deliver the content under a new budget that involves less travel and less expense than in the past. Sending a full union TV crew to foreign countries on per diem costs a lot of money. Much cheaper to do in house interviews with stock video. If Bilton has been an independent documentary producer, he knows how to do things on the cheap. Had he been an experienced network producer, he would have a different view. His first order of business is to staff up for the kind of TV show he & Bari envision. He wants people who shoot video on their phone and production on their laptop. They have three months to put it together. As I said, don't expect it to look like the old show.

That way they can accomplish all of the things they need to do, in terms of the journalistic direction, as well as the budget restrictions. Everybody will be used to doing TV on the cheap. Talk about a culture clash.

NPR did an interview with former "60 Minutes" reporter Steve Kroft about the firings at "60 Minutes."

He's been talking about this with everyone.

I don't understand what the big news is here. The president has been very clear and direct about 60 Minutes. He sued them for "news distortion." He had the head of his FCC step into it and force Ellison to sign an agreement promising to fix CBS News. This isn't a big secret. Everyone has been reporting it for almost a year. Sure it's different when it comes from Steve Kroft. But it's not news. It's just a way to freshen up a story we already know. He doesn't really add anything to the story, other than it's another voice to the chorus.

Everything they're saying is true. This isn't fake news. I can link dozens of stories to this.

The president knows more about network TV than David Ellison, Bari Weiss, or Nick Bilton combined. They're probably asking him for advice since he was a successful reality TV star. We've never had a president like this. He doesn't know government, so he lets the ideologues run it. But he knows network TV. He thinks they have too much power, and he knows how to fix it.

Steve Kroft has interviewed loads of famous people, and asked them tough questions. But what happens when the tables are turned, and a TV guy is running the government, and he's using the power of his FCC to remake network TV and his old show to do what he wants? I bet Steve never imagined that would happen.

Here's more Scott Pelley goes after the Ellisons directly as part of the very reasons that CBS News in the situation they are in today. Yes and it begins with him for letting Bari Weiss run CBS News in the state they are in today.

NPR did an interview with former "60 Minutes" reporter Steve Kroft about the firings at "60 Minutes." While only the audio is there now, I expect a transcription to be available either later this evening or tomorrow morning. After listening to the interview, I will tell you that Mr.Kroft believes that (and hopefully I'm quoting from my memory correctly) ""60 Minutes" is being executed upon the instructions of the President of the United States."" Of course, he has no proof of this (and neither do I nor anybody who has commented on this thread), but to me, given what the Ellisons want the current U.S. President to do for them, Mr. Kroft's belief is not as farfetched as some might think.
Maybe 60 Minutes will be canceled entirely, just as The Late Show was. Maybe they will put entirely different programming in that time slot.

Some may forget that Murrow himself was forced to leave CBS News after his TV battle with McCarthy. He left the business and went to run USIA.
He didn't leave CBS until nearly a full decade after his McCarthy reporting. It is accurate that he fell out of favor with Mr. Paley who regarded Murrow as biting the hand that fed him. That is a comprable analogy to Pelley, but Pelley is nowhere near the news giant that Murrow was.

CBS is clearly taking the high road and offered a nice farewell to Pelley on the Evening News yesterday.

I haven't watched 60 Minutes much recently.

As we all know, Babylon Bee is satire, but the secret to the best satire is when it reveals a hidden, often unacknowledged truth.

The Bee kind of nailed it there!

I don't understand what the big news is here.
I dunno….maybe continuing to call out fascism matters?

Not being a secret does not make a break taking abuse of power any less problematic. But let’s just ignore it and move on.
Everyone has been reporting it for almost a year. Sure it's different when it comes from Steve Kroft.
Um yeah, it is.
But it's not news.
Lots of people knew what McCarthy was. How dare Murrow spend time on something that wasn’t news.
It's just a way to freshen up a story we already know.
Good. Keep it front and center.
He doesn't really add anything to the story, other than it's another voice to the chorus.
When we’re fighting for our country, that matters.
Everything they're saying is true. This isn't fake news. I can link dozens of stories to this.
And dozens more are vital.
The president knows more about network TV than David Ellison, Bari Weiss, or Nick Bilton combined.
No, he doesn’t. His one show was a middling reality show, a short flash in the pan. His failures also included TV—Trump Card anyone? Whatever success that short lived show had was Mark Burnett.
They're probably asking him for advice since he was a successful reality TV star.
Successful is doing a lot of heavy lifting.
We've never had a president like this. He doesn't know government, so he lets the ideologues run it. But he knows network TV.
He also thinks that taking repeated cognitive screenings is a good thing. The dementia is strong.
He thinks they have too much power, and he knows how to fix it.
He may think that, but he also thinks people don’t know that “dumb” ends in a “b.” And that groceries is a new word.

Few of us thought the guardrails in our system would fail so spectacularly and dangerously.

He didn't leave CBS until nearly a full decade after his McCarthy reporting. It is accurate that he fell out of favor with Mr. Paley

What complicated the situation was that Mrs. Murrow and Mrs. Paley were best friends and neighbors.

The main thing that happened after McCarthy was Murrow's airtime and staff were significantly cut.

So it’s definitely happening.

Seems to be a lot of hand wringing from a few folks on this board about 60 minutes and CBS news. Ask anyone under 65, or even 55 how important this really is to them in 2026. People either have, or are fast moving on from traditional media sources...so whatever happens with the old line networks is of less and less consequence every day. Just like with AM radio in most cases, it's becoming a non-viable business model no matter what the political lean is.

It should be really important whether they watch or not. Less real news is bad for everyone.
