The Late, Late show ended in 2023. I'm sure all contracts have run out. He's likely available, which may explain why he did this.
He doesn't have to host a late night show. He could easily do a Sunday night show after football. A weekly show would be less work.
Some of the intellectual property still remains with CBS, so the carpool karaoke bit would have to be changed.

Who produced TLLS? Who owns the IP? Maybe it wasn't CBS, but Letterman's Worldwide Pants? Or Colbert's company? Either way it wouldn't be free, but could be a lot less grief negotiating with those other entities, especially since CBS/Paramount has screwed the pooch so badly over the last year and the other guys might welcome the opportunity to shiv them another time.

I think this is only for The World Cup, I don't see FOX going back into late night. I think the only late night show that ever did decent was Studs from 1991-93 seen a few EPs on YouTube I was too young since it came on at 11PM on WXMI FOX17 in West Michigan, only saw it once when my parents were still out and watched with my babysitter plus it start of Holiday break Dec, 21, 1991.
