MLB Announces New TV Deals

I was equally surprised to see the Angels there, since they just announced they are starting their own RSN.

I'm just going by what I see at MLB.com.

The main thing I see here is "no blackouts."
I see "no blackouts" as applying to the RADIO broadcasts that are part of MLB+. The description of MLB.TV is ambiguous. It says subscribers can watch "every" out of market game "live or on demand." I can tell you that live Red Sox games are still blacked out on my MLB.TV subscription here. However, I can watch them on demand once the games have been over for 90 minutes. How do YOU reconcile this apparent discrepancy?

That's what it says for MLB+. But the specific team packages are offering the TV channel with no blackouts for a lot of the teams.

The Red Sox aren't included in this offering.
OK. I was just looking at the main MLB.TV package. NESN has its own streaming package, NESN 360, that offers the Red Sox, Bruins, minor league baseball, college sports and any other events that NESN holds the rights to. There is still no package, AFAIK, that would allow one to watch every game for every team live, with no blackouts. Even if you live way out in the sticks with no MLB team in your market area (if such an area exists; I think every inch of the US is part of some team's territory, even Hawaii and Alaska), you're still out of luck for Netflix and Apple+ games, which are exclusive to those services.

WTTG to get Washington Nationals games.

Hearst has Tampa Bay Rays for their stations in Florida.

Interesting that the Mariners signed a contract with KING 5 and not with KIRO 7 (a long-time partner from the 1980s-2001 or 2002). It reminds me of the old analog TV days. Yes, you could watch occasional Mariners baseball on rabbit ears before they went cable-exclusive! Unfortunately, they seem to be back to their old "lose 3, win 1" ways...unlike last year's postseason run.

NBC Sports broadcast all 15 MLB games on Sunday July 5th. They had the exclusive. Local broadcasters were excluded.

I notice that the Red Sox-Angels game is scheduled for a 9:30 p.m. EDT start. I wonder how that game -- among the least attractive or meaningful on the schedule based on the teams' won-lost records -- was chosen for its stand-alone status.

Not quite true. In the case of games airing on NBCSN Extra, they used the pxp from the home team, and the analyst from the visiting team.

In any case, I have to "congratulate" MLB and NBC for coming up with the most boneheaded broadcasts since The Baseball Network, 30 years ago.

Boston vs LA. On a network owned by northeast and coastal California-centric NBC. 'Nuff said.

They’re in the Anaheim neighborhood of Los Angeles
True, but they went back to calling themselves the Los Angeles Angels (of Anaheim) several years ago.

It's all about markets. Anaheim is no more a media market than Arlington TX, Santa Clara CA, or East Rutherford NJ.
