‘Jungle’ Jack Hanna Diagnosed With Dementia

“Jungle” Jack Hanna, 74, has been diagnosed with dementia, his family revealed in a letter to the public. Hanna’s family believes the former zookeeper, a favorite late-night guest of Johnny Carson and David Letterman’s, has Alzheimer’s disease.

“His condition has progressed much faster in the last few months than any of us could have anticipated,” the family wrote. “Sadly, Dad is no longer able to participate in public life as he used to, where people all over the world watched, learned and laughed alongside him.”

“While Dad’s health has deteriorated quickly, we can assure you that his great sense of humor continues to shine through,” the letter continued. “And yes — he still wears his khakis at home.”

Hope for the best but sorry to hear him in this situation.

Sorry to hear. I used to enjoy watching Jack Hanna on Carson and later Letterman when he'd bring his animals on, but I lost respect for him about a decade ago when a whacko in Ohio who was in trouble with law enforcement released about 50 of the exotic animals he'd been keeping, including several large game, then shot himself.

Rather than find and tranquilize the animals and then cage them, law enforcement officers instead went on a "big game hunt" and shot and killed most of them. It really caused an outrage among the public as some of the cops were enjoying it a bit too much, and appeared to be doing it for the thrill of hunting big game. Killed (not tranquilized or rescued) by law enforcement were 18 tigers, 6 black bears, 2 grizzly bears, 2 wolves, 2 monkeys, 3 mountain lions, and 17 lions. Hanna came to the scene and rather than condemn the killings and say there had to be a better way and a better outcome for the animals, he said the cops did the right thing by going on the mass killing spree. Needless to say, that didn't sit well with a lot of folks.

Hanna to be become the dumb animal wrangler on the late night shows. His schtick seemed to get in the way of the education.

Here's hoping he will peacefully live out his final months or years. Jack Hanna was a great host on weekend TV and led to a slew of other animal shows.
