‘KIRO 7 News At 4’ To Launch In September

This is expected to add a 4pm news. This is to offset the loss of syndicated programming.

Cox Media Group’s CBS affiliate KIRO Seattle will debut a new weekday newscast at 4-5 p.m. KIRO 7 News at 4 will launch on Monday, Sept. 12, and air live on broadcast and streaming platforms. This new Monday-Friday newscast will lead into KIRO’s flagship 5-6:30 p.m. newscast.

KIRO said that with the addition of the 4 o’clock newscast, it will deliver an additional 260 hours per year of local journalism, breaking news and weather.

Not surprised was wondering not if but when KIRO would jump on the 4 pm bandwagon. Personally I would like to see a whole new anchor team anchor the 4 pm show and not the evening team they have now.

Not a surprise. Everybody else is on at 4pm too in the market.

Welcome to the party! A little late, though.
Given talk shows are getting absolutely crushed after lockdowns, expect to see someone in the market launch a 3PM local newscast.

Kind of makes you wonder if we're trotting toward the old radio model where major stations run 5-minute newscasts at the top of every hour and then go to a 55-minute program. On the flip side, not even CNN Headline News runs "Headline News" (last I checked they were "Forensic Files" 24/7). Cable "News" networks mostly about single-issue each half hour with the same-old same-old pundits n' panels to round out the segment.

The article mentions that they are hiring 6 new team members for this newscast. No word on whether than includes an anchor or two.

Michelle Millman deserves a nod to anchor here. To say she’s loyal doesn’t even do it justice.
I agree that Michelle is very good and deserves a promotion. However, if she doesn't mind the early hours, the morning newscast is probably a more prominent position that the 4pm newscast these days.

I think it's the other way around. Local stations will be local news stations from 4AM to 6PM, prime, then till midnight. Daytime programming already is scraping bottom, and local newscasts are more profitable than carrying expensive talk shows that nobody wants. (Kelly and Drew come to mind).

Daytime tv is a waste land in my opinion. Sure the last remaining game shows (Price and Deal) can be fun but a steady diet of these is not good for your mental health. Soaps are few these days but still have their following I suppose. But to the point of adding local news, yes can help build revenue, but most run the same stories over and over until they interrupt with so called “breaking news”, a much overused term that usually is just an item that hasn’t been reported…yet.

Not surprising but they did go with current on air talent for the new 4 pm show.

4-5 Monique Ming Laven & Gary Horcher
5-6 Monique Ming Laven & Aaron Wright
6-630 Monique Ming Laven & Aaron Wright
7-730 Monique Ming Laven & Gary Horcher
11-1130 Monique Ming & Aaron Wright.

They did add Elle Thomas as the “Live Desk” Anchor, however I would’ve liked to see Elle & Monique split anchoring duties but alas KIRO seems obsessed with Monique or Monique wants to make sure she has as much on air time as possible.

They need to give Monique a break. Yes, she's the main face of the station. But she doesn't need to be on at all times.

I thought I heard Monique is off of the 11pm now.
Apparently she is. Elle is anchoring at 11 now. However I would’ve liked it to be more spread out. Elle & Aaron at 5 & 11 with Monique doing 4 & 7 with Gary and 6 with Aaron or something along those lines.

2.5 straight hours of anchoring for Monique seems a bit excessive (more like a morning anchor's schedule). I'm surprised that they don't have Elle anchoring from, say, 5:30 to 6pm to give Monique a 30 minute break.

Official lineup is:

4-5 Monique & Gary anchor (Elle Live Desk)
5-6 Monique & Aaron (Elle Live Desk)
6-630 Monique & Aaron (Elle live desk )
7-730 Monique & Gary (Elle live desk )
11-1130 Elle & Aaron
