10 kHz AM Frequency of the Week - 1340 kHz

What can you get on the graveyard frequency of 1340 kHz? In Vermilion, OH it is a fair WNCO/Ashland, OH and WEXL underneath sometimes from Detroit during the day. At night it is just slop slop and more slop with WNCO occasionally poking through the mess.

In Memphis: local WLOK day and night. at my location it's the strongest thing on the dial.

Far northwest suburbs of Chicago....

Day: Weak WJOL (Joliet, IL), mixing with slightly weaker WJYI (Milwaukee). WTRC (Elkhart, IN) and KROS (Clinton, !A) have each been known to intrude on a very rare basis with both of these nulled. In the mid/late 1960s, it was worth orienting the radio precisely to produce a clean signal from the very excellent Milwaukee top-40, WRIT.

Night: Graveyard

A weak WTAN (Clearwater) during the day and a jumbled graveyard, unlistenable mess at night, in my portion of St. Petersburg (downtown).

I'm guess I'm about 20 miles s.e. of WTAN's tower, which is near the Clearwater/Dunedin city limits border. (western side of both cities)

Keep an ear out for KVGC Hometown Radio from Jackson, CA. It's a nice mom & pop owned and operated by my friends. I do their engineering work for them.

Right now, in Pittsburgh, PA......dead air static.

By a series of coincidences and unlikely events all of the stations within a potential
reception radius which were on 1340 have all gone dark over the past couple of years.

WSTV, Steubenville, OH
WBGI, Connellsville, PA
WOYL, Oil City, PA
WSAJ, Grove City, PA (*Grove City College)

A bit strange I think as you'd expect a station with a DA and multi-tower site to maintain
to give up the ghost quicker than a graveyarder.

1340 here is local WQSC, which is a talk station. It has a pretty decent signal for a graveyarder, covering most of the Charleston area.

About 8 or 9 years ago, WQSC was off for a long period of time after lightning struck the transmitter. For a week or two, WROD Daytona Beach would come blasting in during the daytime.

Depending where I position my loop antenna, I get WEPM Martinsburg, WV with a sports talk, with WVCV Orange, VA underneath, with adult standards, and DC's black gospel WYCB, all with weak signals, here in northern VA on days. Nights, it's a quite a mess.

From Tampa ....

Daytime - WTAN Not as strong as other locals.

Nighttime - WTAN when the radio faces their direction but gone when nulled out and it's a mess if many stations.

One thing about WTAN....it makes the hop across the gulf and is audible at Perdido Key/Orange Beach on the Alabama-Florida state line. Weak, but on top, nearly alone, and reliable. OTOH where I am this week, about 16 miles south of their stick, the signal is underwhelming at best. For the most part, disappearing at night.

In the daytime, here in Monroe, WA I get KWLE Anacortes, WA (The Whale) and graveyard slop at night.

KATA Arcata, CA [ESPN]
KLOO Corvallis, OR [News/Talk]

From where I live in Baldwin County, AL, I get nothing but splatter from Pensacola's WEBY on 1330 or bleedover from my town's only AM, WHEP at 1310. 30 kHz of splatter may sound crazy but I am practically across the street from their stick. ;)

Down on the beach it's probably WTAM as cyberdad noted, but I've never heard it, personally. I'll have to look for it next time I get down there during the day.

Located in W. Washington...

Usually it's just a GY mess, and I don't DX the GY channels much.

The last one I logged on this frequency was KWVR, Enterprise, Oregon; that was sometime Spring 2012.

Previously (1980's) I'd logged KIHR, Hood River, OR; KAGT, Anacortes, WA: KATL, Miles City, MT; KWWW, Wenatchee, WA; KATA, Arcata, CA; and CKCR, in Revelstoke, BC.

The fact that most of these have different calls now show that I just haven't spent much time on 1340 lately... :)

WEBY splatter will be an issue, but you should be able to null it. WTAN daytime. Very weak, but do-able, WTAM usually fairly easy at night. ;D

In Bellingham, WA it's KWLE 1340, Anacortes, WA. Nighttime as well.

Their tower, being on a marina gets the signal out better than one would expect from a graveyard signal. During the day, it could be easily heard as far away as Seattle, 80 miles south (though south, it gets lost in the noise at night.) But it REALLY blasts to Victoria and Vancouver, BC.

In Lynnwood, WA (just north of Seattle) one night in 1995. I picked up KLOO Corvallis, OR strong enough to hear "Make The World Go Away" Eddy Arnold all the way through before it faded into the muck.

I get a faint signal from WJOL Joliet, IL during the day from Gary, IN. At night, splatter from all the other 1340's.

I have heard the following stations on 1340 khz from here in Newfoundland

1340 khz - WMID - Atlantic City, New Jersey 7:51 UTC 9/10/08
1340 khz - WMDR - Augusta,Maine 5:07 UTC 11/23/10
1340 khz - CFYK - Yellowknife, Northwest Territories 3:11 UTC 2/12/09
1340 khz - CKHV - Happy Valley,Newfoundland 2:20 UTC 1/8/08
1340 khz - WWNA - Aguadillo,Puerto Rico 7:03UTC 8/8/11
1340 khz - WNBH - New Bedford, Mass 7:38 UTC 5/30/12
