10 kHz AM Frequency of the Week - 890 kHz

What do you all get on 890 AM?

Here in Vermilion, OH it is a very weak WLS during the day, which comes in stronger around sunrise then gradually weakens later in the morning. Near sunset, I hear a gospel station on top of WLS, which I'm guessing is WKNV from Fairlawn, VA but I haven't ID'ed it yet. Nights is all WLS. However during some moderate Aurora last Oct., I was hearing Spanish on 890 and no WLS on one of the nights.

Northern VA,

Days, weak WFKJ Cashtown, PA with religious format.
Nights, usually WLS, and sometimes Radio Progreso. And I did heard the Cuban station say "Radio Progreso" one night. You probably heard this Cuban station.

Memphis, TN:

Days nothing
Nights WLS fighting with a Spanish language station (Cuba?)

Baldwin Co., Al:

Days, nothing. Nearest 890 is 300 miles away in Hartselle, AL. I've probably heard R. Progreso during the day at the beach and just forgotten about it, though.

Nights, a mix of WLS and R. Progreso, with Cuba more often than not dominating.

Here in East Texas during the day it's KTXV Mabank, targeting Dallas with China Radio International programming. At night it's a three way mixture of WLS, KVOZ Laredo TX and Radio Progreso. WLS is sometimes dead last, while KVOZ is often very strong (more than they should be, IMHO). Cuba is virtually always there but is generally not the dominant one of the three.

Far northwest suburbs of Chicago....

WLS 24/7. On rare occasions at night, if I null WLS, I can hear Spanish faintly underneath. I've never been able to ID it, but I presume R. Progreso.

Zach: I've never been able to ID R. Progreso daytime at the beach (Perdido Key, next door to the Florabama), but I sometimes do hear a very faint carrier. At night there, its usually Progreso solidly on top, but sometimes WLS takes over.

Near north suburban Chicago it's WLS all day & night.

890 here is usually KIXI splatter in the day.

At Monroe, WA I get nothing days and usually CJDC in BC at night. Sometimes KDXU-UT pops up, and one time I had WLS Chicago with an ID, in September 2010.

From Tampa -

Daytime - Inaudible station which is probably Cuba.

Nighttime - Most all the time, the Cuban station with WLS way in the background. There are rare times where WLS can dominate and put the Cuban station in the background.

But when I first moved down here in '84, WLS had an amazing signal on my Sony AM Stereo Walkman every time I listened at night. It was so fun to hear stereo sound from such a distance.

Daytime? nada (KYWN is off, probably for good this time)
Nighttime? KDXU CJDC WLS KJME(Fountain, CO)

How well does WLS come into Idaho these days with all the other stations on 890?

890 KYWN Meridian ID is back on the air, sort of.
At 7:30pm noted up-tempo Mexican Christian pop music. Sounds like cell phone quality. Now at 9PM running past the top of the hour (no ID) a female SS preaching with Christian pop music, still cell phone quality. Maybe only running 250 or 500 watts day. Definantly NOT the old CE 317C 50kw beast. After sunset didn't note much change in signal but maybe their STA 63 watts non-directional night.

After the preaching ended heard some local talk & SS pop music. Caldwell (ID) mentioned. Didn't hear any ID still. In English "The Future Of Christian Music"

SW Ohio (Cincinnati)
Days
A weak WLS

Sunset
WKNW Fairlawn VA
WBAG Blythewood SC (probably at CH power)
Both are seasonal receptions.

Night
"WLS...in Chicago"

890 kHz from Lexington, KY

Daytime:

WLS Chicago, IL - Very Weak but clear, especially in Winter Months

Night:

WLS Chicago, IL - Usually "owns" the frequency
Unidentified Spanish Station(s) - Often heard weakly under WLS or during Auroral Conditions

Sunrise/Sunset Hours

WKNV Fairlawn, VA
WHNC Henderson, NC - Once fairly common, but not heard in Many Years
WYAM Hartselle, AL
WJTP Lithia, GA
