10 kHz AM Frequency of the Week - 920 kHz

What do you all get on 920 AM?

Here in Vermilion, OH it is mostly slop from local WEOL 930/Elyria, OH but I can get faint traces of CKNX/Wingham, ON which comes in stronger near sunset until they go to night pattern then it's a jumble.

920 days is a very weak KGTK Olympia, WA (Talk).

Nights, I usually get KXLY Spokane, WA (Talk) or KSHO Lebanon, OR (Adult Standards). I've also received CFRY Portage La Prairie, MB (Country) and KIHM Reno, NV (EWTN).

From NE NC car radio. 920 days, nothing heard. Sunrise/sunset WGKA Atlanta, GA, WPCM Burlington, NC and CKNX Wingham, ON.

Far northwest suburbs of Chicago.....

Day: WOKY (Milwaukee), weak. WBAA (Lafayette, IN) underneath
Night: WOKY usually on top and fair. WBAA and CFRY also sometimes surface. I've also heard KARN.

WOKY is a little unusual here in that the nighttime groundwave signal is better than the daytime signal. Even though its powered down to 1kw instead of the 5kw day pattern, which aims most of the juice away from me. Back in WOKY's top 40 days, when the channel was less crowded, it was pretty much all alone, and a very easy (and very good) nighttime listen....nicely tucked between WLS and WCFL.

Cyberdad, as you know, WOKY was the proving grounds for a number of Top 40 DJ's, including one of my favorites, Barney Pip.

Here in parts of SE Michigan, there is a combination of WOKY, CKNX, and WMNI, one or more better than the other depending on your exact location. WOKY has always blasted in right before Milwaukee sunset. After power reduction and pattern change, it's pretty much gone. Further north on Lake Huron, CKNX comes in better during the day.

Before WMMN took down their DA and reduced power at night, they used to be a dominant station at night. I almost always think that becoming a Class D is a bad idea. It just grates on me when stations do this.

In northern VA, it's Spanish language WURA Quantico, VA to the south of me. At night, it's a mess with CKNX often on top.

The stations I have logged on 920 are as follows:

920 khz - CJCH - Halifax, Nova Scotia
920 khz - CKNX - Wingham, Ontario
920 khz - CUBA-R. Reloj
920 khz - CFRY - Portage La Prairie , Manitoba

Here in Thornville, Ohio daytime, it's a very weak WMNI. I'm about 35 miles east of their tower, and they put out one heck of a directional pattern day and night. They squeeze most of their juice north over Columbus and beyond from a four-tower array at the southwest corner of 270 and 71 near Grove City. Their deepest eastbound null comes right at me.
I remember hearing it once on Ohio 2 between Toledo and Port Clinton in 1998. Used only to the weak signal I heard growing up in east Columbus, I was pretty surprised.

NE IL (Palos Twp)- Slop/Frequency War among WBAA (great NPR/jazz station, Indianapolis, IN) and two other stations. I have heard modern, watered country music and Coast to Coast AM. Stations seem to take turns cutting in and out.

C&W may be WOKY in Milwaukee.

CFRY is country and has been strong the past few nights in the north suburbs of Chicago. They are a regular. I generally can't hear WOKY at night since they repaired their antenna system. It's usually either WBAA or CFRY (or both) at my location.

WOKY has to protect WBAA and does a good job of that night and day. They're difficult to hear directly to the south in Chicago (and in the north suburbs where audioguy and radioman are). Much easier to hear 44 miles to the northwest of downtown where I am. CFRY has a fantastic daytime signal, so if something's up with their night pattern, I can see where they'd be quite a pest around here.

Crystal Lake, IL - 40 miles NW of Chicago

Daytime:
WOKY Milwaukee, WI

Near Sunrise/Sunset:
WBAA West Lafayette, IN

Nighttime:
CFRY Portage la Prairie, MB
KDHL Faribault, MN
KARN Little Rock, AR
CKCY Sault Sainte Marie, Ontario

Right on target Cyberdad. In the daytime I usually hear WBAA over WOKY. This has always been the case as I used to try to hear WOKY often during their Rock & Roll years, but usually not well.

Was CKCY heard in the distant past? Or are you thinking of CKNX? CKCY went off in 1992. Along with WMMN, it was somewhat a regular. CKCY went off at about the same time as CFYN 1050. They made a deal that both would turn off their AMs. Now that they could have FM translators, I wonder if they are questioning their decision.

Wow! Hard to believe it's been CKCY has been off, but I''m sure that's accurate. In WOKY's top-40 heyday, CKCY was the most frequent pest here in the far northwest Chicago suburban area.

In college in the late 1960s in southeast Iowa, I used to regularly try for WOKY....which I did snag a few times. But mostly CKCY owned the channel. My best luck with WOKY came early Monday mornings when CKCY was usually off.
