10 kHz AM Frequency of the Week - 940 kHz

KMTX 950 Helena seems to do that "thing" with the Cascades. I can't even hear it at my QTH just 30 miles from the Cascades, and at Yakima, WA (100 mi SE, across the mtns), KMTX tries to overcome KJR at times.

Could you explain what you mean with the mountains? I've never been farther west than DeKalb, Ill. heading in that direction.

They're big piles of rocks with lots of iron and other metals in them.
Scatters and absorbs the ground reflection part of a skywave bounce.

I would expect that to affect double hop, and if the TL is near the mountains, unless the radiation is at an elevation angle above the mountains, it will be absorbed.

I have heard tons of Western and Central MT, but never have I heard KMTX 950 in Western Washington. Also no sign of KGVW 640, yet...

940 here daytime is usually splatter from our semi-local 950 in Charleston, but if you get toward the beach or even away from the noise on the barrier islands, 940 WINZ comes in decently for being so far away.

At night WMAC is usually on top.

A similiar situation here in St. Pete (closer to Miami, but no water path)....... a semi-local on 930 out of Sarasota that sometimes needs to be nulled out to get WINZ-940-Miami during the day.

At night it can be either Miami's 940 or Macon, Ga's 940 coming in, sometimes both at the same time.

Here between St Augustine and Jacksonville I get splatter from local WFXJ 930. At night it's mostly WMAC with Miami's 940 making an occasional visit.

Being located in Western WA, on 940 khz I've heard KFIG (ex-KFRE); CJGX Yorkton SK; KWBY Woodburn OR; and I heard KICE Bend OR once on SRS.

On 950 the only other stations aside from KJR I've heard are the Mexican station which I still haven't IDed, and KTBR, Roseburg OR, which is part of the Oregon Public Radio system.

Crainbebo: I have logged KGVW-640 just twice (one of those times being several years ago). But most times it's just KFI to the South, and nothing from the other bearing.

I logged KGVW in Yakima, sunset skip. KFI roared in after dark, and no sign of anything else (including Cuba which skips a lot in the East).

I had a Mexican 950 last night, but I don't think it's XEKAM - because isn't it Radio Formula (News/Talk)? Paging David Eduardo...

Not sure how much power they're actually running day or night.
Seems they installed a "new" transmitter in the last week or so.
Doesn't like their antenna impedance much. "Chrunchy" audio.
Shows up in many places from 780 to 1190.

I don't see ESPN SS on 940. Gotta check 930, and 1060! KRKY and KGFX would both be new. Does KGFX do ABC News at the top of the hour? I might have had them one early morning in Yakima a couple years ago (at 4AM no less).
