100.3..Sports on FM It just sounds like Music!

That's what I hate about Clear Channel, having a monopoly on the radio when it comes to talk and sports (and rock since they've got the Project AND also WEBN, trying to bring down 96ROCK).

So you hate it that CC is trying to beat Cumulus. That's radio my friend. Corporate radio.. but still radio.

Re: Old School Cincy - 100.3

I respectfully disagree.
a.) You may hear a "smattering" of these songs on WGRR or WRRM but not the depth of the urban oldies they will be (are) playing.
b.) I understand the "young" demo is coveted, but is anyone so blind to think that only young people listen to radio. I use WGRR as an example. Their numbers are - excuse the pun - "great" in this market.
c.) Regardless of all of the backseat quarterbacking on this change, this frequency can only go UP from where they were.
d.) Mojo is gone - get over it - let's move on and welcome this niche format to the market. God knows we have enough sports stations anyway. It was a smart move, period.

:)

Mojo all over again but with an urban lean. This didn't work the last time, why not try CHR?

Aren't there 2 or 3 stations programming to that market either with a straight mainstream CHR, or Hot A/C that can get some of the younger audience? And, you've got an Urban station there as well I think that leans toward the younger listener? Sounds like a pretty crowded market to me as it is now...

Re: Old School Cincy - 100.3

Smart move -- Music programming is a lot cheaper to run. I am guessing that since they are filling a niche in the market that the format will do better than sports did (even if Radio One does no effort in promotion).

Re: Old School Cincy - 100.3

The smart move would have been not to flip to sports at all in the first place. I'm sure Old School will do better attracting advertisers than The Fan did though.

If you have a format that's not working cut your losses. They had a 0.1 share. Billboards can't help that pitiful showing? Cut and run. Back to the hits!

They just didn't launch the format the correct way. Those billboards should have went up a month after they went on the air. Radio One has no business in a format that takes money and talent to attract a audience so they went back to R&B which is their specialty.

Could a sports format on FM work in Cincinnati? I thought 100.3 would stick with that format for a while.

92.3 up in Cleveland is now with that format for close to two years and is one of the new flagship stations carrying the Cleveland Browns.

Who knows? If that format is done right, success might follow.

Re: Old School Cincy - 100.3

I think the Old School stations are more likely to pull off making money better than those Jammin' Oldies stations back in the late '90s and early '00s.

How do you explain The Project at a 1.0 share in the market with no billboards and very little promotion? On a 250 W translator? Maybe some good programming? What a novel Idea?

Re: Old School Cincy - 100.3

Urban Oldies is different than Jammin' Oldies. Whereas Jammin' Oldies typically consists of smaller playlists, heavy repetition and an emphasis on CHR crossover hits (especially from white artists), Urban Oldies sticks to the format. I'all use the recently departed WDAS-AM in Philly as an example (owned by Clear Channel). Their playlist consisted of lots of Motown/Stax, James Brown, All Green, 70s-80s funk (even more obscure stuff like Lakeside, Brick, Mandrill, etc.), and some crossover stuff. I haven't listened yet, but I imagine it will be a bit more watered down, though minus the JO repetition.

Re: Old School Cincy - 100.3

I thought they shouldn't have flipped to the Fan. I knew it was a bad idea. Granted, Mojo was in the 2-3 share range at the time, but was still doing decent.

Re: Old School Cincy - 100.3

In keeping with old school R&B here in Cincinnati, they should change the calls from WCFN to WCIN.

Radio One is not the same as CBS Radio. CBS Radio has deeper pockets, as evidenced by the fact their sports stations are local from morning until, in some markets, midnight or later. Cleveland's 92.3 is a stronger signal than Cincinnati's 100.3.

And 100.3 wouldn't get the rights to any major sports teams. The Reds re-upped with Clear Channel for five more years (as did Xavier University). The Bengals wouldn't go to 100.3 after their contract with Clear Channel ends after this season. A 3,100 watt Class A signal isn't going to get you very far if you want play-by-play of the major sports teams.

97.3 is a Class A 2,500 watt station, so it's not much better signal-wise than 100.3

And 92.3 would not have gotten the rights to the Browns if it didn't agree to simulcast with rival WKNR.
