102.1 Birmingham now Classic Hip Hop and R&B "Power 102.1"

Just caught this today. Have no idea how long ago this took place, but W271BN, more commonly known as "WENN-FM", has dropped its neo-soul format and is now known as "Power 102.1", playing "Classic Hip Hop and R&B". WENN-AM, however, has once again done a disappearing act.

I think that'll work better for them than neo soul was. Birmingham has a large urban audience and classic hip hop is something they don't have. I do however find it funny that an 85 watt translator is calling itself "Power" LOL!

Their name should be Micro Power 102.1, this is clearly an effort to cut off 104.1 the Beat from further penetration in to the market. Cox is practicing cannibalism, this will cut into 95.7 Jamz.

And won't 105.1 Jamz in Tuscaloosa cut into 95.7 Jamz's ratings, too?

Yes. Despite 95-7's small signal they always seem to show up in the ratings in Tuscaloosa. At least this way it's Cox on Cox which… um… sounds kind of dirty.

The Taylor on R-I newsletter pondered whether Cox will use this new signal to try to force the 105.1 translator in Birmingham off the air. Wouldn't THAT be something? It worked in Detroit!

It's not out of the realm of possibility. It appears those two signals (WALJ and W286BK) are already stepping on each other in certain areas. One of the "Hallelujah" listeners a day or two ago was complaining on the station's facebook page that she was in the Bessemer area, and she was hearing "Jamz" on the 105.1 frequency rather than "Hallelujah"'; she was not pleased. The station she was hearing was more than likely WALJ. Of course, the translator has to accept whatever interference it receives, but if Cox could demonstrate that W286BK was interfering with WALJ's signal, then they could use that as means to force the "Hallelujah" translator off the air, even if it's only temporary until the issue of interference was resolved.
