102.5 WDVE Signal Distance

Figured I would post. In comparison with the WDVE signal map on radiolocator.com, and personal tests, I’ve noticed further distances than indicated on the map. Traveling east on the pa turnpike from Pittsburgh, WDVE cuts out right as you get into the Allegheny mountain tunnel. Going north, I’ve captured WDVE going as far as lake Wilhelm, just off of I-79 north, maybe a little further than that. Does anyone have anything similar to add, or does anyone have the locations where WDVE fades out going west or south? Also, are there any other grandfather stations from Pittsburgh, that follow the same distances as WDVE’s signal?

What you are seeing is simply the effects of terrain. Allegheny mountain to the east blocks out everything from Pittsburgh as the land rises upon to that peak. Circle maps have been used for years and really do not tell you really useful information except in the most general sense. Stations use Longly-Rice maps which take into account terrain and give a good picture of coverage. Circle maps are ok for sales or general use.

Longly-Rice maps are at https://www.rabbitears.info/fmq.php

The header says "Television" but most FMs are available.

Here is WDVE:

It’s signal has to get stomped out to the northeast by Buffalos one of 2 110,000 watt 102.5. I do remember once when WMJQ at the time got knocked off the air and we could pick up DVE in southwestern New York loud and clear. But I also think their is a 102.5 in Ohio also that probably disrupts both stations in current times.
