102.7 FM frequency here in Detroit should be flipped Classic Hip Hop and R&B

Why don't Radio One consider using the 102.7 FM frequency here in Detroit for a 24/7 Classic Hip Hop and R&B format, instead of Gospel Music?

Also to add no major company such as CBS, Clear Channel or Cumulus even have a Classic Hip Hop format on any of their stations yet. Only small owners are taking the risk with the format.

They should have Gospel in only one daypart with Smooth Jazz taking up the rest.

Radio One may blow it if they don't handle Mason's loss of show better. He's very popular and has an outsize impact because of his Pistons work. A lot of his fans are upset.

I can tell you why, it is easier for station whom already been playing hip-hop for the past 30 years like WJLB to play some classic hip-hop hits during their mornings, middays, and afternoon dayparts and in their mixes. I highly doubt that classic hip-hop as a format will ever get off the ground due to it being seen as 'so passe' to most of the urban music audience.

If you didn't know this is what R1 does, soak up a market with their three top formats, UAC, Urban, and Gospel. Period. WGPR had the lowest ratings in the market with such a blowtorch signal. I'm not surprised this happened, but I AM mad that R1 took over WGPR instead of say, Inner City, or URBan Radio, or Perry.

I knew 102.7 couldn't compete with WJLB since the switch from 105.9
But they wanted TJMS on the bigger signal.
Since then I haven't seen 105.9s ratings as high as they were when it was Urban Mainstream.

So now R1 is playing "catch-up"
The only thing I don't like is that they are as flaky as Chicago weather, as Tony the Tiger... as seen in markets like Dayton and Louisville and now even Houston, they end up leaving the market after sucking up indie owned stations.

The biggest problem that will never boost a Radio One urban mainstream to the top is the non-local morning show.

Rickey Smiley won't ever top WJLB in mornings period. A morning show is what keeps listeners hooked to a station through out a day.

Perry runs his stations cheaper than Radio One. Just listen to KVSP and KRMP in OKC and the Perry stations in Augusta GA. Inner City is on the verge of going out of business and Magic Johnson is trying to buy the company. Actually WGPR ratings improved with the PPM rating system vs. the old Diary book. WMXD playlist became very identical to all of the Clear Channel Urban AC jukeboxes and WDMK leans more on Oldies vs. currents so WGPR had a unique sound for Detroit.

Perry has medium and small markets, which is a way different strategy than a major market. Of course with so much competition in the 313, there's always only so much advertising revenue available.

I'm amazed that R1 is able to "pick up" ANY new stations they sold off many and have been in financial turmoil too.

I believe that is the reason why 107.5 frequency is being operated via a LMA rather than being purchased because Radio One lacks the funds to purchase anything.

If you have an HD Radio, you can hear Classic Hip-Hop on the HD-2 of WJLB. It's prepackaged iHeartRadio programming, though, and not customized for the market.

I remember Cox had a gold-based Urban station in Atlanta where most of the playlist was '80s and '90s urban and hip-hop hits. They flipped it to Classic Rock Hits and it took the market by storm.

Old School Saturdays on WGPR kicked butt... that is probably the thing I will miss the most about that station. If WCHB were to drop its remaining gospel programming now that gospel is on 102.7, I'd love it if they could fill the music programming slots with the Old School Saturday music library... either that or Smooth Jazz.

Were they delisted? I think i remember hearing about that!

The Gospel format on 102.7 WPZR is not doing well so far, so that's why I am suggesting a new Classic Hip Hop format. Gospel failed on AM 1200 with their big powerful AM signal that's why they went back to mostly news talk format.

Radio One is currently waisting 50,000 watts of power on 102.7 FM here in Metro Detroit playing Gospel Music, Classic Hip Hop would have been better. I'm gone try to write to Radio One my suggestion for Classic Hip Hop on 102.7 FM Mount Clemens/DETROIT.

And another thing I will mention is that Radio One still is playing Gospel Music on AM 1200 WCHB when their talk programming go off the air at night at 11 PM here in DETROIT.

Radio One could always put Gospel Music on 105.9 WDMK HD-2 CHANNEL and relay it to their FM translator station in southern Oakland County at 99.9 FM and name it Praise 99.9 .

Here is what im suggesting that RADIO ONE do with 102.7 FM in DETROIT:

Radio One favors its Urban AC and Gospel stations over its Mainstreams which all sound like crap. I dont see them changing any of their stations to Classic Hip Hop no time soon.

In a majority of markets Radio One runs The Urban AC gets the best ratings for them followed by mainstream and gospel. They could have went Jack like they did in Columbus or radio now like Indianapolis but 102.7 would probably rate just as bad with those formats. Jack vs doug and Radio now vs Channel 955 and Amp Radio 98.7 they would get killed.
