103.7 the Band is now the Bay's Greatest Hits

You would think that someone would contact Dave Sholin, who is still in the area, to be
the PD of a classic hits station. I think he would have a good idea on what hits to play for
San Francisco. ;)

In their quest to run KKSF on the ultra cheap, CC has reduced this station to a bland jukebox of boring, overplayed, "who cares?" music, with insincere BS from voice trackers, only some of whom actually live here. K-Fox lights up their SF signal and KKSF is the first to blink, showing just how committed Clear Channel is to "The Band." This station will be something completely different in six months...but still run on a shoestring budget. You get what you pay for....

But the problem is, sometimes it works and you get more than you pay for. KISQ is run on the "ultra-cheap" too, I think. I believe Tony Sandoval and Lisa St. Regis are local here, but I know that they're voice-tracked on multiple other Clear Channel stations. Kiss-FM is doing quite well in the ratings, and probably brings in some solid revenue for CC.

Of course, 98.1 has been around with the same format for over 12 years, and Renel is back and popular, so the station probably has a fairly loyal following - obviously not the case with the new KKSF.

This is not rocket science!

Listen to KRTH & KOOL online..."Exactly" the sound that's missing in the Bay!

Just don't understand why this is so hard to figure out??

Listened to The Band for about an hour yesterday and couldn't have been more bored/disinterested!

Indeed, I put them on in the car last nite for about 20 minutes and got to hear both "Margaritaville" AND "Killer Queen" ::)

Folks:

I've listened to "The Band" in the last week a few times. Totally sucks. Better to listen online at home or work if you want a quality classic hits station.

OK, I fully admit that I can only handle "the band" in small doses. So I haven't listened a lot. But does anyone else besides me think the only thing they changed was the liners? The selection of music sounds pretty much the same.

Wanna hear a great classic hits radio station in the bay area? Then just stream Q104.5 out of the San Luis Obispo, CA. area. Or check out Pirate Radio from Santa Maria, CA. for good Classic Rock. The Beach is pretty good too. Or even The Crush. Why can't we have radio like that here in the bay area? Sad!

I don't listen a lot either, but my impression was that some of the pop-leaning stuff (Seals & Crofts, Badfinger, "American Pie", and a few soul cuts) wasn't there before. If they're planning a full-on "Classic Hits" push, they're doing it very tentatively.

Exactly. I remember 95.7 The Drive tried the same thing. When the full-on Classic Rock thing didn't work, Bonneville added a few dozen 60s and 70s pop hits, though in The Drive's case, they didn't bother to change the imaging, just the play list. So you'd hear Hang On Sloopy between Bohemian Rhapsody and Sweet Home Alabama. It was kind of weird.

A full-on Classic Hits pop-format play list would probably do better, even if they didn't bother with the jingles and the high-energy DJs. I agree with those who are shaking their heads wondering why they are sticking to this half-assed approach.

By the way, another great Classic Hits station (at least a year ago, when I was in Palm Springs) is K-Des...which, according to the internet, has now moved to 98.5. Medium sized market or not, their format is very entertaining, and they've managed to successfully integrate a lot of 80s hits. Good DJs, too - for instance, Bob O'Brien and LA veteran Russ O'Hara.

Programmers in SoCal and the Southwest seem to have a successful grasp on the Classic Hits format!

KDES/Palm Springs, The Walrus/San Diego, KOLA/Inland Empire, KRTH/L.A., KOOL/PHX, KKLZ/Las Vegas.

All sound good, all do well!

What's with the Bay Area and this format?....7 million people and there's no market for Classic Hits??

You mean Russ "O'Hungry" O'Hara! Best DJ ever on KKDJ 102.7 Los Angeles. Well Almost...John Peter's was pretty good too. And Charlie Tuna, and Jay Stevens.....

In all fairness, the 7-million market size might be part of the reason, plus the demographics of the Bay Area vs. the ones where there are successful classic hits stations. Phoenix, the Inland Empire, and Las Vegas have generally older populations and fewer ethnic groups. Still, it ought to be possible for somebody to carve out something in the 2-to-3 share range. Whether that's enough to support the format, I'm not sure.

Yes, those are all very good stations and SF seems a little late to the Classic Hits party. As it is with the Band, it is only half heartedly at the party. I believe the Band will lean more and more pop as time goes on.

For everyone who keeps saying the bay area needs a Classic hits station, I have only one thing to say:

1550.

I think even Dave Sholin has moved on. It's 2011, not 1971.

Does this mean he's renounced his royal title and abandoned his duchy?

Well, since Gavin, he did do some oldies DJing, but that was what, 3 or more years ago. Is he retired from the biz or doing something with contemporary music again?

a syndicated format on a crappy AM signal getting a .3 rating is not the answer. ;)

Shannon's music mix isn't at all bad; quite surprising at times, in fact. If I lived out in the middle of nowhere I'd be quite grateful to have it. But SF deserves better.
