103.7 the Band is now the Bay's Greatest Hits

Didn't San Francisco have a high turnover rate of Classic Hits format?
Remember, 107.7 KSAN before the Bone? 95.7 THE Drive? 99.7 KFRC? and late reincarnation of 106.9 KFRC?

99.7/KFRC was an Oldies, then Classic Hits station from 1991 to 2006. I wouldn't consider 15 years to be "high turnover." The Drive was more Classic Rock than Classic Hits, though it morphed into a more hit-driven format toward the end, along the lines of what KKSF is currently doing.

I didn't listen to KSAN more than a couple of times before The Bone imaging, but I believe it was also Classic Rock.

the pre-Bone KSAN (when they had Darien O'Toole in the morning) was a pop-leaning classic rocker -- lots of Elton John, Billy Joel, 3 Dog Night... the stuff harder-edged classic rock stations don't play.

For everyone who keeps saying the bay area needs a Classic hits station, I have only one thing to say:

1550.

I visited San Francisco this past weekend and was looking to find a traditional oldies station to listen to. 1550 AM was the closest thing I could find, but, unfortunately, it is not on par with other classic hits / oldies stations across the country, i.e. KRTH (L.A.), WCBS (N.Y.C.), WLS-FM (Chicago) and KRWZ (Denver). My main problem with 1550 AM was the high amount of 70’s hits, the lack of local personalities and their very mediocre night-time signal. I was staying right smack dab in the middle of San Francisco by Union Square, and their night-time signal had quite a bit of static. That’s unacceptable and it doesn’t surprise me that the station garnered only a 0.2 share in the recent ratings.

I also tried out The Band and wasn't too impressed with this station either. It's a shame San Francisco doesn't have a better classic hits / oldies stations. I believe the Bay Area wouldn't have a problem supporting a decent classic hits station if put on a decent stick. Perhaps 103.7 could be that station.... someday!

The bright-side of my trip was listening to a high-quality all-news station in the form of KCBS. On top of that, you are lucky to have it on FM (106.9 FM). It’s no wonder that station completely dominates the ratings in the Bay Area. I have to say KCBS was the station I listened to the most while in San Francisco. The only annoying thing about this past weekend were the constant “snow watch” updates on KCBS! ;D

I also think that we are lucky to have a top-notch All-Newser like KCBS, the only other market with a FM All-Newser is DC with WTOP, another top-notch station.

One format that 103.7 FM should try is Jack FM. Like the one in Los Angeles 93.1 FM KCBS. Because now we have 102.1 and 107.7, Jack FM is something new for SF market. Playing classic rock to today's alternative and everything in between.

Jack was already tried and failed. it wasn't called Jack though, most likely due to not wanting to pay the fees for the Jack brand.

indeed, it was called "Max" and was at 95.7 in-between country formats. It was interesting for about a month ("OMG! 'Tired of Toein' the Line' by Rocky Burnette!") and then settled into the same-old, same-old.

I was listening to The Band for a few minutes yesterday, and heard Brandy (You're A Fine Girl).

Can My Guy, Let's Stay Together, Don't Pull Your Love, and other burnt-to-a-crisp Classic Hits be far behind?

I think they should try 103.7 Jack FM (Or Tom FM) It'd give the station some personallity...

I think Max failed for one reason, it was on 95.7

People sometimes say certain frequencies are "jinxed" but I don't know if I go for that. For a long time folks said that about 98.9. While it's an inferior signal, KSOL seems to be doing fine. 95.7 is the lowest powered station on San Bruno, but it's only a couple of DB behind KITS and The Bone. They're also on the Mt. Diablo booster system, which gives them great coverage throughout Walnut Creek, Concord, Pleasanton, Livermore, etc. When it was both Max and The Drive you didn't really hear about signal problems. People just didn't like it all that much.

Just in Vegas and listened to KKLZ.....Along with KOOL/PHX and KRTH/L.A. , best mix of music I've heard for Classic Hits!

Are you listening Band powers-that-be??
