103.7 WZVL Highway 103 is on the air in Zanesville

The long awaited replacement for the 102.5 signal in Zanesville is now on the air, broadcasting from the WHIZ TV tower. The Station has picked up the country format that ran on the former Highway 102 WCVZ Baltimore Oh, When that station moved into the Columbus metro. and is now leased to WWCD 102.5 the alternative station.

It's odd that a radio station gets license in one city but has their transmitter in a completely different location. I know here in Columbus we have quite a few stations like that.

One down one to go..

I wonder if WKOV http://cdbs.recnet.net:8080/goo_curves.php?data=40.027|82.177|11.5|147|60|0|244|0|2 has started to build out their "moved" station yet that will also reach the Zanesville area?

Its a little more complicated than that, first before WKOV can move from the Jackson Ohio area up to Near Zanesville, WCMJ has to move from its current 96.7 to 102.7, they do also get a power upgrade in the process from 2300w to 4500w at about the same height. That will allow also WBIK 92.1 to move to a better tower site, due to short spacing rules.

Then once that is complete, 96.7 WKOV in Wellston ohio (Jackson) can move to the new site licenced to Frazeysburg, Oh between Zanesville and Newark.

103.7 is a directional signal aimed away from columbus. With only 2400w it is very week by the time it gets to Rt 13 on the east side of Newark. so i doubt that there will be much of a problem, at least i didnt see any driving around today

I live in Thornville and Rewind sounds great here. It does well until the 103.3 in Zanesville completely trashes it (how in the world you get stations on both 103.3 and 103.7 that close to 103.5 seems utterly dumb to me, but whatever). But where my girlfriend lives, atop a tall hill near the mall, Rewind does cut through the slop. With a 103.7 on the air out there, forget it! I am driving out Friday morning so I'll see how things sound.

If wkov is sold to EMF then there will be a big battle brewing between 89.3 the River and 96.7 K-love. That will be interesting.

I just was throwing that out there... I dont know if JACKSON COUNTY BROADCASTING, INC. plans to still program the station when it moves way out of their normal area.. or if they would consider selling it. Naturally there is no way they can program it from Jackson once it moves to its new location as they would be outside of its coverage.

Not that odd, actually. Philo actually fits into the 60dBu service contour for WZVL. So they're able to get away with it.

Update to my earlier post ... 103.5 indeed is trashed in Zanesville. Even atop the hill east of Colony Square Mall, you can hear Rewind trying to come through - as in you can hear whatever is on 103.5 isn't simply slop from 103.3 or 103.7, but it has no chance to actually be heard against local stations on either side. It doesn't really punch through until about six miles west of Zanesville.
Here in Thornville, totally different story. Where I live, a few blocks west of "downtown" on the western slope of a hill, 103.3 and 103.7 are nowhere to be found even in a car. 103.5's hash kills them both. Where I am, we get straight shots of all Columbus signals because we face west and really there's nothing to block them. 92.7 and 105.9 are the only Zanesville stations you can hear on a house radio here, and 92.7's quite weak even though you can hear it quite well all the way to Pickerington and Reynoldsburg on a car radio. 107.3's tower is on the other side of Perry County but I have trouble with it here in the house and in the car (mostly because it's weak and 107.5's sidebands trash it).

103.3 is a translator for WUFM in Columbus which was put on before 103.7 was. If 103.7s transmitter would have been in Philo it probably wouldn't cause as much interference with rewind 103.5 as it does. It is odd how close these stations are being assigned so close to one another these days. Where 103.5's transmitter is in coordination with 103.7 it's probably less than 50 miles.

Definitely less than 50. 103.5's tower is right along I-70 about two miles west of State Route 310. It looks more like a cell tower than a radio tower, but that's it. Line of sight, that's about 37 miles or so west of Zanesville.

It's nice to see radio-info has finally posted cover maps for new and upgrades radio facilities. For the last three years or so, they
have not bothered to upgrade them.

Also, is the tOMW going to post any more Columbus radio news? Maybe tOMW will stick with only NE Ohio radio news in the future?

About to make an official announcement on the board...we're sticking to the home field.

That doesn't mean we won't post ANYTHING about Columbus, Toledo, etc., but it won't be on our regular beat anymore. We will still post about stuff that involves NE Ohio people down there, or heading there, or heading back, etc., or any other connections, and we reserve the right to invoke the "WLW Exception" (the "WTVN Exception"?). :D

If Nathan wants to post any stuff from Columbus, he's more than welcome to do so.
