104-3 MY-VOICETRACKED-FM ANNOUNCES ST JOHN IN AFTERNOONS

With the caliber of personalities right here they could have? This is unconscionable, and obviously about nothing more than money.

Embarrassing. Voicetracking PM Drive into the second biggest market in the country? Really?

Other than money, the only rationale I can think of is that they want to keep it music-intensive but want someone good in between the songs rather than a random no-name with little talent. I would imagine St. John will place a bit more focus on this particular show than a voicetracked show in Topeka, KS, and I'm not knocking him at all, but honestly...

Yup, the beancounters are certainly in charge; there was absolutely zero reason to take Charlie Tuna off the air.

What a reprehensible act for a totally classless corporation.

Sadly, we're all very used to acts such as this, aren't we?

It's not money that's the main issue here. Michael Martin loves St. John. He made him the image voice of MyFm too which to me wouldn't be so bad if they had a female voice to go along with him, but from 3-7 its all St. John. There's no doubt he's a decent jock, but in LA there's no real need to track. They will save a few bucks, but it really restricts what can be done especially with contest playbacks, talking to traffic reporters & such. And what if there's an emergency like an earthquake? Then what? Then it becomes apparent that it's a canned show. But hey, this is how CC does it in cities across the nation...

Perhaps this is a naive question, and a rhetorical one - especially since Martin has already said the shows would be combination live and voice-tracked - but why not simulcast live in both markets, so S-J could keep the live interactions with callers that keeps his show lively on Wild 94.9?

LA and SF are in the same time-zones, afterall. They would have to accomodate traffic reports, station promos, and separate commercials, but they already have to do that with VTed shows.

Just asking...

My thoughts exactly and if they want to fly him around, why not certain days or alternating weeks broadcasting from LA and San Francisco? As far as accommodating local commercials, traffic and whatever, that has to be done if they voicetrack anyway.

As an aside, I worked at a Classical Music station in Columbus where they voicetracked the entire day with a single announcer. He had a sort of flat deliberate delivery with little inflection. The listeners would write comments about his sleepy style and asking that the station give him a break from working such long hours so he wouldn't be so tired.

I dont think its a question of if they can, thats how all syndicated programs work. I think they just dont care anymore. Maybe there getting ready to sell off properties once CC goes private. Just a thought.

I doubt they'd sell KBIG because of the strength of the signal. I've heard they'll have to sell 2, but it could be KVVS and one of the AMs. That would make the most sense.

It could be they don't simulcast his show because the two stations (Wild and My FM) target two different demographics. So it might be difficult to satisfy both. It's Rythmic CHR versus Hot AC.

Unless I'm mistaken, these two stations are different formats as well. It's not like it's a talk show.
They're music intensive formats.

Thanks - that's obviously the answer to my question about simulcasting. I just naively assumed that MyFM had adopted the same format as Wild.

According to comments quoted in Don Barretts column CC Prog VP Martin said that he will be burning up frequent flier miles, sometimes tracked, sometimes live and sometimes a combo of both.

It's not uncommon to do two different shifts for stations in different markets, but If he's occationally doing two live shows simultaniously, will he really be able to do a good job focusing and relating to two different lifestyle groups like Wild's CHR listeners and Myfm's AC audience at the same time?

I can't wait to hear the wrong calls or station reference on air.
CC is known to spread their people too thin, but screwing with PM drive at prominant stations in two majors is rediculous.

Voicetracking in Los Angeles makes me puke! :'(

THERE IS NO EXCUSE for a city with 15 million people to have a voicetracked program in PM drive!!!!

Comments like that are very petty and childish. Hey we all know voicetracking sucks, but bottom line is it happens. Deal with it. The average listener doesn't know or care if the jock is in LA or New York or wherever. Quite frankly, if you can save a buck and have a top class talent relate to two differnet audiances, I'd be congradulating the talent, because how many of you who bitch and moan about V/T can do what the Saint can do, with passion?

Hey, read my post. I don't bring issue with voicetracking. It's the suggestion from Michael Martin that at times he could be doing two "live" shows at the same time. It's about the ability to 100% focus and effectively relate with passion to two different lifestyle audeinces at the same time. The efforts a station makes to attract ratings and advertising money spent in PM drive in LA and SF deserves top drawer attention.

"Boy Toy" Jesse Lozano does PM drive at KIIS-FM. He also does PM drive at Channel 933. The shows do sound similar; lots of interacting with callers. I noticed that while Jesse was speaking on one station, the other station was either playing a song or in a commercial break. So my question is: Is Mr. Lozano live in LA and tracked in SD or is he doing two live shows simultaneously?

Speaking from experience, as fast as the Clear Channel WAN can transmit a VT and knowing that BTJ has a producer on the board at all times at KHTS, I have no problem believing that he's doing both shows "live." If KHTS is forwarding their phone lines to KIIS while he's on the air, I can believe that even more.
