105.5 The Dove plays “You Oughta Know” by Alanis Morissette

(A little after midnight on Wed/Early Thurs. I think)

Anyway, way too hard for 30 years ago for AC (maybe even Hot AC) but I thought The Dove was a soft AC.

The version they played (which I heard Live online) was a little “lighter” and not the original. Sort of like an “unplugged” special recording.

I liked it - but can’t find it online. Anyway know where I could find it somewhere?

I wonder if “Welcome to the Jungle” by GnR will ever hit the AC stations. I don’t even think any will play “Jump” by Van Halen. Maybe by 2030.

Alanis fits on Dove with "Ironic" or "Hand in Pocket", not "You Ought to Know". Targeting certain demographics is fine, I understand the age range here and what they're doing, however, there's a difference between too hard and too soft on a station. Based on your reasoning, they should be playing "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and "Man in the Box". These songs are not "lite favorites". If Dove wants to be Mix... then drop the "lite" imaging and just be "105.5 D-U-V" or something like that. The imaging sounds foolish playing 90's alternative.

Those songs don’t test well with women. So why would they play them? The Dove is going for a female demo. Alice In Chains and Nirvana appeal to men in that demo and they belong on 98 Rock. Alanis Morrisette does have female appeal which is why she’s on The Dove.

As to your concern about if it’s “lite” enough, apparently they are playing the live version which is less aggressive than the original version.

Even though WDUV played the less edgier, radio-friendly live version of "You Oughta Know" and it's been 30 years, don't you think it's still kind of an, um..... vitriolic song lyrically? For a Soft AC station at least?

It's what kept even this version off AC radio even back then; Too much angst.

And the important thing to remember in all this in spite of the demo changes is people come to Soft AC radio as a refuge from, not a trap for, one-sided heated arguments at work, In the car. Or relaxing at home. You're trying to set a lighter mood. Not a UFC cage match.

That's
what makes the inclusion of "You Oughta Know" so baffling to the rest of us.....

Here we go with the testing nonsense and that's EXACTLY what's gonna get WDUV in trouble with its core audience and the ratings are recently showing it. What Bongwater said above is correct, the song lyrically doesn't belong on WDUV based on everything else they play and the image they promote.

I think lighter AC can do sad and power-rock (like LA’s KOST playing “Blvd of Broken Dreams/Holiday” by Green Day but Alanis’ is kind of like Anger Central (just a made-up phrase) and that’s uncomfortable like wearing a shoe two sizes too small. Just my opinion - I think The Dove should probably chop it from their playlist. Even though it is a great song -both versions.

As heard on WDUV today, this "lite favorite" from Alanis - gee, I wonder if it was the live version... Is it Christmas season yet?
